Report on Canadian Students Studying Medicine Abroad
Over the past several years there has been an increasing interest in Canada in learning more about Canadians studying medicine abroad (CSAs) and the schools in which they study. Canadians studying abroad represent a significant group of potential physicians who could aid in supplementing our physician workforce; however, governments, policy makers and medical education faculty lack detailed information about this group of students. To be able to effectively integrate returning CSAs into our domestic health human resources planning processes, the medical education community needs to understand not only the barriers that impede students from returning home, but also learn about their individual educational experiences abroad.
CaRMS has released a comprehensive report on CSAs. The study estimates that there are approximately 3500 Canadian students enrolled in medical schools abroad, sharing a desire to return home to Canada to practice medicine.
