Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR)

The MSPR/dean’s letter is a letter of standing from the dean or principal of your medical school.

Typically, this document:

  • Reports on activities during medical school; and/or
  • Comments on performance in clinical rotations; and/or
  • Gives a recommendation for further medical training; and/or
  • Reports on time spent in each specialty or department (hours or weeks).

All MSPRs/dean’s letters received at CaRMS will be treated as confidential and will not be shared with applicants.

Graduates of Canadian and United States medical schools

You must arrange to have the undergraduate office of your medical school send an original copy of your MSPR to CaRMS.

If you have previously participated in a CaRMS match and have had your documents forwarded to your current profile, you may not have a complete version of your MSPR, as it may have been submitted to CaRMS before the completion of your final training year. You must decide whether or not you wish for your medical school to provide us with a completed copy for your application. Incomplete documents may not be accepted by programs.

Graduates from international medical schools

International medical schools can use our secure online transfer site or undergraduate (UG) portal to send in your MSPR/dean’s letter. Medical schools can register for the online transfer site by contacting documents@carms.ca or register for the UG portal by contacting communication@carms.ca.

*Note: we cannot guarantee that all MSPRs/dean’s letters from international medical graduates (IMGs) have been sent from the source.

If you do not have access to your dean’s letter, we suggest that you explain in your personal letter or upload a note for programs to explain why you are not able to provide one. If an MSPR/dean’s letter is in a language other than English or French, you must provide an official translation of the document. If a program requires the foreign language document, upload the document in your CaRMS Online account. Please do not submit the original foreign language document to CaRMS unless requested as an extra document by the program.
