Applying to the US (ERAS)

Residency in the US through ERAS

Updated July 12, 2011

Applying to both CaRMS and National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

In order to facilitate applicants who wish to participate fully in both the U.S. and Canadian Matches, CaRMS honours the contract for the U.S. NRMP Match.

Applicants may register with both matches and apply to Canadian and U.S. programs, with the understanding that the CaRMS match is run before the NRMP match.

An applicant can submit a rank order list to both the NRMP and CaRMS.

This year, when participating in both matches, the applicant will have chosen to try to match to Canadian programs before American programs.

If matched to a R-1 position through CaRMS, the applicant will automatically and without any notification be withdrawn from the NRMP. It is the applicant's responsibility to inform CaRMS in writing if (s)he has applied to both CaRMS and NRMP.

If, for any reason, an applicant is released from either the Canadian match contract or the U.S. match contract, the Applicant is NOT eligible for the second iteration of the CaRMS Match in the same year. For the purpose of such match, the applicant shall be deemed to be a matched applicant.

SECOND ITERATION MATCH AND NRMP MATCH

Any applicant who registered in both matches must wait until they have had the CaRMS match results to determine whether they are unmatched in Canada before they can scramble for a position in the US. Any applicant who is accepted to a position in the US through the scramble must withdraw from the second iteration of the CaRMS R-1 Match before the CaRMS withdrawal deadline.

ERAS

ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service, the Association of American Medical Colleges. CaRMS acts as the Dean's Office (DWS) for Canadian medical students and graduates only applying to positions in the United States. This is a completely separate system from the CaRMS Applicant Webstation (AWS).

Students and graduates of Canadian medical schools wishing to participate in the US Match, will have to do an online request for registration. Once this registration is complete, the applicant will then be sent a token via e-mail along with instructions for registering with the National Resident Matching Program and payment for CaRMS Dean's Office Services.

Request for Registration will open July 12, 2011 (12:00 ET).

Please note that if you would like to apply for specialized graduate training in fellowship programs in the U.S you must contact the ERAS Fellowship Documents Office (EFDO) https://www.erasfellowshipdocuments.org/.

Documents that will be used for both ERAS and CaRMS will require a coversheet from each system. It is essential applicants have documents to CaRMS at least one week prior to deadlines. Documents should be clearly identified as "ERAS Documents" and applicants are responsible for notifying CaRMS that the documents have been delivered to CaRMS in a timely manner.

For more information regarding the ERAS, please go directly to the Association of American Medical Colleges website: www.aamc.org/students/eras/.

The complete list of programs participating in ERAS for 2012 can be found at: https://services.aamc.org/eras/erasstats/par/

J-1 Visa

The J-1Visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by the United States Department of State through U.S. embassies and consulates. Medical graduates planning to attend medical residency in the United States must apply to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) {www.ecfmg.org} for J1 Visa eligibility once a residency training contract has been obtained. The J-1 visa application to ECFMG must include a 'ministry of health letter' or 'Statement of Need' from Health Canada. The Statement of Need / J-1 Visa program is administered by Health Canada with direction from the provinces and territories. Health Canada provides MDs with an application package and assistance in preparing a request for a Statement of Need.

The Health Canada contact is Ms. Judith Lewis, Program Administrator, Telephone 613-952-1912, Facsimile 613-948-8081, E-mail j1visa@hc-sc.gc.ca.
