Application Process - Ranking - Strategies

Updated February 5, 2012

Ranking Strategy

Your rank order list (ROL) is submitted through the Applicant Webstation (AWS).

When creating your rank list, consider the following:

  • Carefully evaluate all the programs you have applied to and rank them according to your preferred discipline(s) and location(s); do not rank programs you are no longer interested in.
  • Base ranking selections on your own preferences and not how you think a program will rank you.
  • Rank order lists are the decision makers in the match - any previous conversations with programs with regard to mutual interest is not official, nor binding, and should not impact your decisions.
  • Listing a residency program on your submitted rank order list establishes a binding commitment to accept an appointment if a match results. Failure to honour this commitment will be a breach of this agreement and may result in the penalties described in the Applicant Contract.

Completing the rank order list

You are only able to rank a program once unless you are ranking programs as part of a couple. For instructions on couples ranking, click here.

Please note that there are two stages involved in successfully completing your rank order list. They are:

  1. Save, which allows you to create and save your draft list. This list can be modified, but is not entered into the Match; and

  2. Submit, which is a two-step process (ie: 'Submit step 1 of 2', 'Submit step 2 of 2').

Once a list is submitted, it is entered into the match. If you wish to make alterations to your submitted list, click the edit button. If you edit your list, your previous submission will no longer be valid and you must save and submit the revised version. As indicated in step one, a saved list is not entered in the match.

Submitting your rank order list is the final step in the application process. If you do not submit your list on time, you will not be matched in that match iteration. There are no exceptions. CaRMS is unable to submit or modify an applicant rank list after the ranking deadline passes.
