The University of Calgary residency programs enable trainees to achieve certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The University of Calgary has 59 accredited programs.
The University of Calgary offers PGY-1 Royal College programs in Anatomical Pathology, Anesthesia, Cardiac Surgery, Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Medical Genetics, Neurology (Adult and Pediatric), Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Radiation Oncology. Further training is available in a number of sub-specialties in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Surgery, and the Clinician Investigator Program.
Family Medicine is a two year program, accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, with the option of a third year of additional special skills training, e.g., Anesthesia, Care of the Elderly, Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care, etc.
Training may take place at any of the affiliated teaching hospitals within Alberta Health Services which include: the Alberta Children's Hospital, the Peter Lougheed Hospital, the Foothills Hospital and the Rockyview Hospital. In addition, rotations may occur at other locations in southern Alberta. Residency programs benefit from the excellent working relationship between the University and the Health Region and extensive clinical opportunities.
Calgary is a dynamic city with strong community spirit. It features many outdoor attractions such as a scenic network of jogging and cycling paths, as well as close proximity to mountain hiking and skiing in Banff and Lake Louise.
Graduates of University of Calgary residency programs, with certification by either the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, plus successful completion of Parts I and II of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination, are eligible for licensure anywhere in Canada.
The University of Calgary tuition fee for 2011-2012 is $948.00 per annum. This fee is subject to change.
There is a significant reimbursement for this fee as part of the agreement with PARA.

| In Hospital Call |
In-house call is on a one-in-four basis. No resident shall be scheduled to be on call more than 7 nights in 28; a portion of 2 weekends in 4; and on duty more than 24 consecutive hours. |

Home call is on a one-in-three basis. No resident shall be scheduled to be on call more than 9 nights in a 28 day period. |

All programs at the University of Calgary will conform to deadlines published by CaRMS which include dates for short-listing candidates and periods during which interviews will be offered. Candidates who are short-listed for interviews will be provided dates for interviews in accordance with CaRMS deadlines.
Admission to Alberta programs is limited to graduates of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Canadian residents and permanent residents who are graduates of non-LCME accredited medical schools who wish to do postgraduate medical training in Alberta must apply to the Alberta International Medical Graduate program (AIMG).
