Introduction

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a city of 707,000. The faculty is located on the Bannatyne Campus, in the city centre. This campus also contains the schools of dentistry and medical rehabilitation. Programs

A full training program is offered in the Department of Family Medicine, accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). As well, 24 primary specialty programs and 22 subspecialty programs are currently accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Training Sites

Several hospitals in Winnipeg as well as health centres in rural Manitoba provide a variety of training sites for the various programs.

Health Sciences Centre: This is an 800 bed tertiary care complex next to the Bannatyne Campus which includes an acute care adult hospital, the Children's Hospital, the Women's Hospital, and hospitals for both rehabilitation and chronic respiratory care. The Manitoba Cancer Care Treatment and Research Centre is included in the complex. The Health Sciences Centre is the Level I trauma centre for the City of Winnipeg. In 2007, the Critical Services Redevelopment Project Building opened, with new ORs, ICUs, and Emergency rooms for both adults and children.

St. Boniface General Hospital: This tertiary care hospital is located four kms from the Bannatyne Campus. It is an acute care hospital with 600 beds and supports both RCPSC and CFPC training programs. The St. Boniface Research Centre is immediately adjacent to the hospital.

Seven Oaks Hospital, Misericordia Health Centre, Grace General Hospital, Concordia Hospital, and the Victoria General Hospital are community hospitals in Winnipeg which support various aspects of the training programs at the University of Manitoba.

The Family Medicine program includes rotations in the communities of Dauphin and Brandon. These are regional health centres in central and southwestern Manitoba respectively. There are dedicated satellite training sites in Dauphin (Parklands Rural program) and Seven Oaks Hospital.

Of interest, more recently, Manitoba Health has developed a department entitled The Office of Rural and Northern Health (ORNH) to promote non-urban health care. Further information regarding this governmental department may be obtained by linking to www.ornh.mb.ca
