Hospitals

The hospital network at McGill University continues to evolve as health care reforms are made. This evolution involves reducing the number of in-hospital beds and increasing activities in the ambulatory care setting, both for clinic visits and surgical procedures. As of 1997, The Montreal Children's Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Neurological Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital (including the Montreal Chest Institute) have merged to create the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Plans call for the building of a new facility (to include the merged research institutes) on a new site. In the meantime, the existing hospital sites will continue to fulfill their traditional functions.

Royal Victoria Hospital opened in 1894, houses a complex of several pavilions with a bed complement of 584. The hospital has annual in-patient admissions of over 18,000 and 358,077 ambulatory service visits. It provides teaching programs for medical residents, medical students as well as students of the other health professions. The Allan Memorial Institute became the hospital's Department of Psychiatry in 1943. A Research Institute was established in 1981 in order to coordinate one of the largest hospital-based research programs in the country. The Montreal Chest Hospital became the Chest Institute of the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1994. The hospital houses the McGill Nutrition and Food Science centre, the McGill Prostate Centre, the McGill Transplantation Centre and the McGill Ophthalmology Institute.

Montreal General Hospital has a bed complement of 406. There are approximately 11,253 admissions and 31,940 visits to the Emergency and 284,656 visits to Out-Patient clinics. In addition, there is an outreach program with hospitals in Northern Quebec. It is a designated Level-1 Trauma centre with over 800 trauma cases per year specializing in orthopedics and traumatic brain injuries. It also provides teaching to medical residents, medical students and students from the other allied health sciences. Founded in 1821, it has the longest clinical teaching record in North America, and in 1823 became the first medical school in Canada. The present hospital was opened in 1955 with a Research Institute which opened in 1973. The McGill Centre for Tropical Diseases and the McGill Host Resistance Program are based at the hospital. The other special McGill program at the MGH site is The McGill Pain Center. The new site will be ready in 2006.

Montreal Children's Hospital admits about 8,000 patients per year into its 180 beds, 44 of which are intensive care, both neonatal and pediatric. The largest component of the hospital's services is provided on an ambulatory basis: annually, over 100,000 medical, surgical, and psychiatry visits, 75,000 Emergency visits, 5,000 day surgeries, and close to 10,000 day treatment center visits, including oncology, intensive ambulatory/home care, dialysis, and clinical investigation unit. Aside from offering a complete roster of pediatric subspecialty services, the hospital is also a center for specialized multidisciplinary programs, including, among others, newborn heart surgery, tertiary-level trauma program, asthma program, bone marrow and solid organ transplant programs, cleft palate/craniomaxillofacial surgery program, and a developmental and behavioural pediatrics unit encompassing child development and adaptation services and programs. Teaching is provided for medical students as well as residents and fellows. The hospital also provides clinical training for allied health professionals and technical students at the college and university level. The McGill University-Montreal Children's Hospital Research Institute sponsors research and postgraduate education in disciplines related to child health and research in children's diseases.

Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital combines a hospital and research institute under one roof. The hospital operates 96 acute care beds, admitting more than 2,000 patients per year and more than 30,000 ambulatory visits per year. It provides facilities for the investigation and management of a full range of clinical neurological and neurosurgical problems. In addition, there are facilities for research in a wide range of basic neurosciences. Founded in 1934, the hospital and Institute provides training for a number of clinical and research fellows. Special areas of interest include epilepsy, neuroimmunology, molecular neurobiology and genetics, neurodegenerative disease, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and brain tumors. The Webster Pavilion centralizes brain imaging resources, provides laboratory spaces, and includes a 350 seat amphitheater.

Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital is an acute care hospital of 637 beds where over 21,700 patients are admitted per year (including 3,500 deliveries). It also provides 351,000 consultations in emergency and outpatient departments. The surgical departments perform 14,740 operations including 9,350 in day surgery. The hospital supports a large geographic full-time staff for its teaching responsibilities to students and medical residents. Founded in 1934, it has since established many tertiary care programs including high risk obstetrics, cardiac surgery, neonatology, head and neck surgery, oncology, and neurosurgery among others. The Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry and the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research were established in 1968.

St. Mary's Hospital Centre is an acute care specialized hospital with 316 adult beds and 65 bassinets. The hospital is a high volume obstetrical centre with 3,636 deliveries. An academic Family Medicine Centre is very active with a large complement of residents. Significant services include renal dialysis, oncology with 8,894 out-patient visits, geriatrics, psycho-geriatric, and clinical epidemiology and research. There are approximately 15,356 patient admissions and 119,282 Ambulatory Care visits annually. A total of 8,143 patients were operated upon of which 5,008 were surgical day patients. The hospital maintains very active undergraduate and postgraduate training.

The Centre hospitalier des vallées de l'Outaouais (Gatineau pavilion) is an acute care hospital of 323 beds serving a community of 100,000. It also offers specialized services to the Ouatouais region in many sub-specialties and is the center for radiooncology, pediatrics and neonatology, obstetrics and E.N.T. The family physician is a key player in the health care team and is involved in all hospital activities like emergency, obstetrics, teaching and many others. The family medicine unit is progressive and is accredited for the two year duration of the program. The hospital has a visionary look on the future of health care and is involved in clinical projects with its partners, CLSC, other hospitals and nursing homes, as well as technological projects like tele-medicine and computerized clinical charts. Its goal is to render to its clients services that meet the highest standards and to offer to its staff the best working environment.

The Douglas Hospital is a McGill teaching psychiatric hospital. It has a tripartite mission of clinical excellence, research and teaching. The hospital has 4 divisions: Sectorized Services Division, Child Psychiatry Division, Psychogeriatric Division and Ultraspecialized Programs Division. It provides teaching programs for medical residents, medical students and other health professionals. There are presently 288 beds in the hospital.
