1. Reference Letters
   Three letters of reference are required, of which two must be from Emergency Physicians. Each letter must be accompanied by the "Referee Assessment of Applicant" form.

4. Permanent Resident Card
   Candidates must be Canadian citizens or have obtained Landed Immigrant or Canadian Permanent resident status at the time of application. To allow us to determine eligibility, please provide a certified copy of either Record of Landing or Permanent Resident card.

Interviews

The Selection Committee chaired by the Program Director will conduct interviews and resident representatives from the current program will also meet separately with the applicants. The date of our interview is scheduled for December 2, 2010.

Program Information

Overview

The College of Family Physicians of Canada offers one year of specialty training in Emergency Medicine through its CFPC(EM) Residency Training Program. Any physician earning a Certificate in Family Medicine (CFPC) is eligible to apply. Upon successful completion of the residency program and satisfactory results on oral and written examinations, candidates are conferred with a Certificate of Special Competency in Emergency Medicine (CFPC(EM)). The Dalhousie Department of Emergency Medicine received accreditation for the CFPC(EM) program in March 1994.

The objectives of the program are to reflect the need for residents to develop initial assessment and management skills for all acute and critical illness, and to ensure a broad clinical knowledge base. Learning will take place on an accelerated path with graded responsibility, and will include departmental management and administration. To accomplish these objectives residents must spend a considerable amount of time in the Emergency Department or ambulatory care setting. Member departments of the Department of Emergency Medicine in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will be used as training sites. Residents will spend time at several sites to provide a broad range of experience.

Curriculum

The following is an outline of the specialty rotations (four weeks) undertaken during the PGY3 year:

Research

Research activity is a necessary component of this program and key to the academic development of our discipline. There is an annual Emergency Medicine Research Day at which residents are required to present a Critically Appraised Topic, which is prepared during the annual Evidence Based Medicine.

All residents attend an annual Evidence Based Medicine program which is integrated within our core curriculum and presented by expert EM faculty. By the end of the residency, residents will be able to critically evaluate medical literature and independently design a research project.

Seminars and Rounds

There will be a protected academic half day each week. Core curriculum will be covered in an interactive format, with the first two months of the academic year devoted to interactive, simulator-based sessions on topics fundamental to Emergency Medicine. The residents coordinate weekly "interesting cases rounds" with their peers. Residents will also participate in faculty rounds that will include a Maritime Videoconference Grand Rounds, Trauma Rounds, M&M Rounds, and Journal Club. Part of each week's interactive period will be spent with the RCPS residents to allow for better group participation.

Accreditation

The program has received full accreditation since 1994.
