Medicine Subspecialty Match (MSM)
Application Process - Overview

Online Application
All R-3 Medicine residents from Canadian universities and other applicants, including those from other disciplines applying for positions in Critical Care Medicine, must complete a Request for Registration. Registration opens July 12, 2011 (see Timetable).
Once you have been registered by your university or your request for registration has been reviewed and verified and you are deemed eligible to participate in the match, we will send you a token by e-mail. This token will provide access to the Applicant Webstation (AWS) and allow you to initialize your online CaRMS account and begin the application process.
Your token will enable you to access the Applicant Webstation (AWS), which you use to apply to programs.
You should work on your application as soon as possible to avoid rushing as the completion deadline approaches. If you rush, you're more likely to make mistakes or overlook requirements. Note that once you submit your application, you cannot modify it. You must use the update notes section to inform programs of changes.
NOTE: Complete your application carefully and thoroughly before you submit it. Requesting that CaRMS un-submit your application will cost you $134, and un-submitting your application may take up to three business days.
You may complete a bilingual application in CaRMS. Email CaRMS at bilingualrequest@carms.ca to request this option. In the email, please include your name, CaRMS code (if known), and school of graduation. Note that once you submit your application, this bilingual feature is no longer available to you.
Supporting documents are those that you assign to the programs that you applied to.
Read the program descriptions in the program directory to find out which documents programs would like to receive. These documents may include letters of reference, personal letters, abstracts, or résumés.
You can create extra documents, personal letters, and a list of references at the same time that you complete your application's information sections. You must send all documents other than your personal letter to CaRMS with the appropriate cover sheet for processing. For details, please see supporting documents.
If you have requested a bilingual application, you will be responsible for translating documents where necessary (e.g., transcript).
You can begin selecting programs once program selection begins (see Timetable). However, you can submit these selections only after you have submitted the "My Application" section of AWS.
You can select second iteration programs once the results of the first iteration have been announced. You can submit your program selections only after you have submitted your application.
You must have submitted your program choices before you can assign documents to those programs. You can assign documents over time; you need not assign them all at once. Assigning documents takes a long time, so avoid leaving this task until the last minute.
When you assign documents, make sure to select, save, and submit them. If you change any of your selections, you must save before submitting. For more detailed instructions, please refer to the AWS Help Manual.
You are responsible for scheduling interviews directly with the programs, not through CaRMS. You will generally receive interview invitations by e-mail from the programs, so please check that these e-mails have not gone into your junk mail or trash folders.
Applicants access the ranking system through the Applicant Webstation (AWS). Access will be granted only during the period listed on the timetable (see Timetable).
You can rank only programs to which you have applied; however, you are under no obligation to rank any or all of these programs. For further details on ranking, please see the ranking section.
You will access your match results from the CaRMS home page on our website. An Applicant Match Results button will be available beginning on the designated Match Day (see Timetable). To see your match result, you will need the user name and password you used to access the Applicant Webstation (AWS).
