Emergency Medicine Residency Program CFPC(EM)

Health Canada Emergency Medicine Residency Program (Return of Service Required)
Overview
The Health Canada funded Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a full 12-month program leading to a CFPC Certificate of Special Competence in Emergency Medicine (EM), which focuses on preparing residents to provide services in underserved communities in Ontario. The program is open to both family medicine residents and practising family physicians who wish to complete PGY3 training in EM to enhance their skills. In addition to the curriculum identified in the CFPC EM program, enhanced training to support practice in rural and remote communities will be provided.
The Health Canada positions require a two-year return of service (ROS). As well as matching to a program in a specific faculty/school of medicine, the applicant will be required to sign an ROS contract with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (the ministry) for service in an eligible community in a LHIN designated by the ministry for that faculty/school (see table and note below).
Specific communities and emergency departments (EDs) in the designated LHINs will be identified approximately six months prior to the completion of each PGY3 training year under the program. At that time, location matching will take place and each applicant will be expected to sign a Practice Location Agreement that will identify the specific community in which he or she will return service.

NOTE: The approximate number of eligible EDs in this table is preliminary (as of summer 2011) and will be updated annually since eligible EDs may change periodically in response to changing environments. The list of eligible EDs is used as a guideline only. It is based on a methodology developed by a working group with representatives of the ministry, faculties of medicine, ED LHIN Leads, Health Force Ontario Marketing and Recruitment Agency, and other stakeholders. The methodology uses quantitative and qualitative indicators to identify and prioritize EDs in communities that would benefit from services provided by CFPC-EM physicians. In summer 2011, no eligible ED sites were identified in Mississauga Halton, South East, or Toronto Central LHINs.

Overview
The year is split into four-week blocks of:
- Adult Emergency Medicine - Five blocks are spent in the Emergency Department at The Ottawa Hospital
- Longitudinal Paediatric Emergency Medicine - During 4 blocks at The Ottawa Hospital, you will be assigned shifts at The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for shifts in their Emergency Department
- Community Emergency Medicine - One block in a rural emergency medicine setting
- ICU - Two blocks of Adult ICU
- CCU - One block at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
- Anaesthesia - One block, 2 weeks adult, 2 weeks peds
- Orthopaedic and/or plastic surgery - One block
- Electives - Two blocks of elective time
During clinical shifts, residents are supervised by staff emergency physicians. This allows for one on one time with staff MD's who are country wide and world leaders in research, ultrasound, and medical education.
The academic curriculum comprises of a weekly academic half-day (AHD), arranged in a series of medical specialty blocks within emergency medicine. The first 10 weeks are dedicated to resuscitation and trauma skills. Academic sessions are run by staff emergency medicine physicians. Rounds are mostly held separate from the Royal College EM Program allowing for a more focused curriculum to meet CCFP-EM objectives.
Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds precede AHD weekly. There are weekly resident case rounds throughout the year, combined with the FRCP residents.
From January through June, residents will have practice orals in preparation for the CCFP-EM core competency exam.
All residents are trained in Ultrasound and receive certification by the end of the academic year. During one of your Adult EM Blocks, you are given protected time with supervised scanning shifts to develop your US skills with an US trained supervisor.
A new state of the art Simulation Center opened in Oct 2010. During your Emergency Medicine rotations, you will have biweekly sessions to focus on more practical / hands on experiences of the curriculum. Workshops include pigtail catheter insertions, nasopharyngeal scope use, trauma scenarios, chest tube insertion and the opportunity to receive direct observation and feedback on leadership and code running skills. A hand lab led by a plastic surgeon is also held annually.
The Department of Emergency Medicine holds its journal club every month. Residents present a brief summary and then a critical appraisal of a previously circulated article.
All residents are required to participate in a small scholarly (academic/research project/chart audit), which they present at Research Day in June.
