Program Information

Overview

The College of Family Physicians of Canada offers one year of specialty training in Emergency Medicine through its CFPC-EM Residency Training Program. Any physician earning a Certificate in Family Medicine (CFPC) is eligible to apply. Upon successful completion of the CFPC-EM residency program and satisfactory results on oral and written examinations, candidates are conferred with a Certificate of Special Competency in Emergency Medicine (CFPC-EM).

The program consists of two core training sites in the province, based in Regina and Saskatoon. Residents in both sites regularly connect via videoconferencing for Wednesday academic half days.

Our strengths are providing comprehensive clinical exposure to all areas of emergency medicine and dedicated emergency medicine educators.

Mandate

The goal of our training program is to prepare family physicians to integrate into their emergency practice the principles of family medicine. These objectives for special competence in emergency medicine fall within the domain of the four principles of family medicine.

Program Resources

Regina General Hospital (RGH) and Pasqua Hospital are tertiary referral hospitals in Regina.

Regina General Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for invasive cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, trauma, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, pediatrics, hemodialysis and interventional radiology. Residents are required to complete rotations in adult emergency medicine, CCU, ICU, anesthesia and orthopedics at this location.

Pasqua Hospital is the referral centre for oncology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, internal medicine, general surgery and orthopedics. Residents are required to complete rotations in adult emergency medicine, anesthesia and plastic surgery.

Royal University Hospital (RUH) is a tertiary hospital in Saskatoon. The emergency medicine teaching program is based out of Royal University Hospital. RUH is a referral centre for invasive cardiology, cardiac surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, trauma, orthopedics and neurosurgery. The pediatric emergency department is open 16 hours a day seven days (0800-2400h). Residents may complete rotations in adult and pediatric emergency medicine, cardiology, ICU, plastic surgery, anesthesia and orthopedics at RUH.

St. Paul's Hospital (SPH) is the referral center for internal medicine, general surgery, nephrology, otolaryngology, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, palliative care, invasive radiology and hemodialysis centre. Residents may complete emergency medicine, ICU, plastic surgery and anesthesia rotations at St. Paul's.

Moose Jaw Union Hospital is a community hospital 50 minutes west of Regina. Residents are required to complete a community emergency medicine rotation in Moose Jaw.

Foothills Medical Centre, Calgary, Alberta is a comprehensive tertiary care teaching hospital and level 1 trauma centre. Residents are required to complete a rotation in trauma.

Curriculum

Scholarly Project

Residents are required to complete a scholarly project. Resources and support are available from the Academic Department of Family Medicine.

Teaching Program

A formal teaching program in emergency medicine consists of grand rounds, academic half days and journal club. Academic half days occur weekly. Learning objectives are achieved through formal teaching rounds, seminars and workshops. There are scheduled combined academic programming with Saskatoon residents for fidelity simulations and critical care week.

Accreditation

The program received full accreditation status from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in October 2009.

Selection Criteria

• Acceptable academic record
• Commitment to the principles of family medicine within emergency medicine
• Proven interest and aptitude in Emergency Medicine
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Eligibility for licensure in the province of Saskatchewan

Requirements

• Certificant CFPC
• Completion of PALS, ATLS
• Prior to commencement of training, successful applicants must also provide proof of:
  1. current ACLS certification (as of July 1, 2012);
  2. immunization records and proof of immunity (titres) as required by the
     health region(s) in which they will be working.
