This program is twinned with Western's Regional program

Note: All candidates interested in the University of Western Emergency Medicine Residency program are encouraged to apply to both the Urban and Rural Streams. All applicants will be interviewed simultaneously.

5. Eligibility
   Proof of citizenship must accompany your application. Any one of the following is acceptable:

   • Photocopy of Canadian citizenship certificate, Record of Landing; or
   • Photocopy of Permanent Resident Card/Canadian Citizen Card.

Program Information

Overview

The University of Western Ontario Division of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Family Medicine offer one year of specialty training in Emergency Medicine through its CCFP/EM Residency training program.

Both an Urban and Regional stream of training are available. The residents in the urban stream all will do 1 - 4 week block of Emergency training outside the London area. The residents in the rural stream will do a minimum 3 - 4 blocks of Emergency training outside the London area and in community hospitals such as Sarnia, Stratford, Windsor, Chatham, Owen Sound, and Strathroy. The rest of the year has similar rotations for both streams.

Learning takes place in tertiary and surrounding community hospitals depending on the stream chosen to help the resident develop skills and confidence in managing acute and critical illness. We strive to foster leaders in Emergency Medicine and Community Medicine with exposure to prehospital, administrative and academic Emergency Medicine.

The year is comprised of 4 week and 8 week blocks as follows:

Research

There is a combined Resident Research Day with the FRCP residents. There is extensive infrastructure to assist with the development of this activity.

Each year the incoming EM residents will be responsible for the design and implementation of a CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) project. The project will take the form of a chart audit pertaining to various topics of interest in emergency medicine. Examples may include: 1) time from presentation to delivery of thrombolytic agents for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction, 2) time from presentation to the delivery of antibiotics in the patient presenting with sepsis, and 3) choice of out patient intravenous antibiotics in patients with cellulitis. The resident will design the question, review applicable charts and synthesize data, and deliver the information in a poster or oral presentation format. This will help to illustrate and support CQI as an ongoing necessity for the practicing academic emergency physician.

Seminars and Rounds

An ED U/S course will be organized for early July, 2011 which will be mandatory unless the resident has previously done the course.

Thursday mornings are protected academic time throughout the year. In July and August we have "summer school" which is a combined practical hands on session with the FRCP residents on various topics such as monitors, U/S etc. From September until June there will be 4 hours planned each Thursday morning which includes Journal Club, Epidemiology, Radiology, EKG Rounds and Grand Rounds as well as a 2-3 hour core content. We have six separate Epidemiology Rounds (combined) and six journal club planned over the course of the academic year where residents are expected to participate. Video conferencing is available at some rural/regional sites.

The second Thursday of every month will be a full academic day.

It is expected that residents will attend at least 75% of teaching activities through out the year.
