Program Highlights

This two year program currently includes clinical rotations at Vancouver Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital. Electives are also organized at other centers including the B.C. Cancer Agency (BCCA) and Richmond General Hospital (RGH). The organization of rotations is designed to provide a range of clinical experience ranging from quaternary services to community gastroenterology at a major academic health center, in the context of graduated increase in responsibility.

Flexibility is built into the program to allow trainees to tailor training to their specific needs including gaining clinical experience elsewhere or to engage in basic research training.

Program Curriculum

The rotations are from one to three months in duration, and are classified as follows:

Core Clinical Rotation
2 – 3 months blocks at either VH or SPH – first and second year

Required Electives
1 month blocks of Nutrition (SPH) – first year
Radiology (VH) – first year
Pathology (VH) – first year
Oncology (BCCA) – first year

2 month blocks of Hepatology and Transplantation (VH) – second year

Recommended Electives
2 x 1 month blocks of Community Gastroenterology – second year
1 month elective
1 month of research

Ambulatory Training

Throughout the entire two years consisting of one-half a day per week unless the trainee is outside Vancouver

The trainees complete fourteen months of core clinical rotations and four months of required electives, totaling 18 months. The trainees have 6 months to choose the electives that suit their personal preferences and for future career growth and development. It should be noted that nutrition, radiology and pathology should be taken during the first year. Also, the core clinical training is divided so that exposure is segmented over a period of two years to allow development of graduation of responsibility.
