Selection Criteria

Applicants will be marked according to academic standing and clinical interest supported by documentation and evaluation of rotations in nephrology. Research initiative in the area is an asset but not mandatory.

Program Highlights

We invite you to join our nephrology training program which provides a complete and in depth exposure to a wide variety of renal related disorders over a two-year period,. Areas include electrolyte and acid-base balance, urolithiasis, hypertension, urinary tract infection, as well as the acute and chronic kidney disease, acute nephritic syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, and isolated hematuria and proteinuria.

Trainees are provided with opportunities for venous catheter insertion, kidney biopsies, acute hemodialysis therapies (conventional, nocturnal, satellite, hemodiafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapies, etc.), peritoneal dialysis, and to learn the basics of renal transplantation and immunology.

Program Curriculum

The residents will start with their rotations in the Royal Victoria Hospital, but will also have some rotations at the Montreal General and Jewish General Hospitals. The first year consists of 4 periods of hemodialysis, 4 periods of consults, 2 periods of transplantation, 2 periods of peritoneal dialysis and one month of an elective. The second year usually consists of 2 periods of hemodialysis, 2 periods of consults, one elective in pediatric Nephrology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and one period in renal pathology. The remainder of the second year is often tailored to the needs of the trainee, either to start a Master’s Program in clinical epidemiology, or allow further training in research or other areas of interest

Academic activities of the trainees include:
Nephrology Half-day on Fridays 9:30 to 12:00 am, including journal club.
Nephrology Grand Rounds on Fridays noon– 1:00pm
Research Conferences on Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm
Pathology Conferences incorporated in the Nephrology Grand Rounds
Trainees are encouraged to attend an advanced renal physiology course at McGill University during the academic year, September to December on Tuesday afternoons

We provide a two year clinical fellowship program which lays the groundwork to pursue careers in academic Nephrology, including research, as well as community-based practice. Career opportunities may include:

  • Clinical Nephrology
  • Hemodialysis
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Transplantation
