Program Highlights

The University of Calgary continues to offer a flexible program that can be extended into a fifth year of training as the trainee's objectives dictate. Although we anticipate that a GIM 5 year sub-specialty program will eventually be formalized, for now, the option of a single year of training will exist until it is formally implemented at the Royal College level.

The GIM program in Calgary has a strong commitment to medical education and all trainees are expected to participate formally in undergraduate and residency education. Opportunities to explore coursework or additional training are supported when feasible with the core training program commitments. We encourage graded responsibility and development of leadership skills. Weekly academic half days provide opportunities for structured and independent learning. The curriculum is geared toward core GIM topics, CanMeds objectives, and exam preparation. A monthly divisional Journal Club is attended by city wide faculty and our Residents will present on a regular schedule. Research mentors are identified early when trainees have an interest in pursuing additional projects or training in these areas.

Call responsibilities are rotation dependent. There are no in house call responsibilities on any of the core rotations. Some residents will select rotations where in house call is expected (e.g. ICU or CCU). In general while on any GIM service, trainees are expected to mirror the call expectations of their attending physician. PARA guidelines are respected at all times. All residents are funded to attend the CSIM and Rocky Mountain Retreat conferences. Additional funding may be available in certain situations. An annual retreat just prior to the beginning of the year is set up to preview the upcoming year and to meet the families of residents and faculty.

Program Curriculum

The core clinical rotations are a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences usually blended into each block in a 50/50 split. Rotations including MTU Junior Attending, IM consult service, Maternal Medicine, and Chronic disease management are mandatory and comprise a total of 6 of the 13 blocks in first year. Each trainee will have rotations at each of the 3 hospitals in Calgary and are encouraged to do IM rotations in smaller Alberta cities if they are able. The remainder of the rotations will vary depending on the objectives of the trainee and may include research, academic, medical education, ambulatory clinics, sub-specialty rotations, critical care, out of town electives and treadmill rotations. We try to individualize each Resident's schedule to reflect their career goals and identified areas of need for increased exposure.

Opportunities for a fifth year of training are available to all trainees and may be clinical, academic, research, procedural, or a blend of these. Currently funding is available through the PGME for all residents who completed their core training in Alberta and through an application process is potentially available to trainees who completed their core years elsewhere. Other routes to fifth year funding and beyond are also available and can be discussed in more detail with interested candidates.
