CEO, Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)
John Gallinger is CEO of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS), an independent, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service for medical training throughout Canada.
Prior to his tenure as CEO of CaRMS, John gained extensive leadership experience in the health care, professional services and resources sectors. He has worked with boards and senior teams developing and executing strategies to achieve superior performance in client experience, operational excellence and financial sustainability. His prior experience in for-profit and not-for-profit settings includes executive-level roles with prominent Canadian organizations such as VON Canada, Enbridge and Emco.
John is an active volunteer, having held numerous community and industry-based board positions while also doing individual volunteer work with adult literacy groups and Habitat for Humanity. John is also an avid endurance athlete, competing in marathons and triathlons. He lives in Ottawa with wife Patti and enjoys traveling to visit their five sons.
Chief Services Officer
Brendan Mullen is the Chief Services Officer of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Brendan contributes to organizational strategy and helps ensure a customer-centric approach through leading and integrating the organization’s activities relating to stakeholder relations, product and service development, communications, client relations and services to accomplish our business objectives.
Prior to joining CaRMS, Brendan held the position of Director, Product Marketing at one of the biggest brands in the charitable sector – United Way. In this position, Brendan was responsible for customer acquisition/retention strategies across all channels for both business-to-business and business-to-customer markets that drove $45 million in annual revenue.
Outside of the office, Brendan can be found playing sports. He’s an accomplished tall-ship sailor and loves to travel the world with his wife and two young children.
Chief Operating Officer
Robert Lee is the Chief Operating Officer of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS), an independent, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service for medical training throughout Canada.
Prior to joining CaRMS, Robert was a founding partner and CFO at SHOP.CA where he had the opportunity to work in all areas of the business including technology development and leadership, compliance, finance and administration, as well as marketing and all Board affairs.
Outside of the office, Robert loves to bike (mountain and road riding), ski and spend time on the Gatineau River boating, swimming and enjoying all water sports. He plays golf poorly but with a smile, and loves travel, food and wine appreciation. Robert is the proud father of three children with his partner Jasmin.
Governance and administration
Manager, Governance and Administration
Michele has been with CaRMS since May 2010. As Manager of Governance and Administration, Michele considers herself fortunate to have the opportunity to work with every department at CaRMS, with the Board of Directors, and with many key stakeholders in the Canadian medical education community. Prior to joining CaRMS, Michele worked for ArtsSmarts, a national non-profit organization that brings artists and educators together in the classroom, engaging students in a creative approach to learning.
Michele has also trained and worked as a professional cook, and is a passionate foodie and wine lover. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking up a storm, acrylic painting, karaoke, and trying to keep up with her daughter.
Manager, Communications and Marketing
Lisa has been with CaRMS since August 2012. As Manager of Communications and Marketing, Lisa develops, writes and edits communications materials for a variety of internal and external channels and products, including CaRMS’ website, the CaRMS Online application system, reports and publications, and social media. Lisa has 10 years of strategic communications experience gleaned through her work in politics, the federal public service, and at Crown corporations across Ottawa.
Outside of work, Lisa enjoys travel, reading and spending time with friends. She is married with two sons, Max and Leo.
Research and data
Manager, Data Services
As Manager of Data Services at CaRMS, Michel is responsible for enabling data as a strategic asset to the organization to support both operational and corporate decision making. Michel holds a Bachelor of Social Science (BSoc.Sc), is currently completing an MBA in Data Analytics, and holds professional designations in Business Intelligence and Data Management (CBIP, CDP, CDMP). Prior to joining CaRMS, Michel has 20 years experience working in various capacities in Business Intelligence for the Canadian Medical Protective Association, Statistics Canada, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), Volunteer Canada and the private sector.
Finance and human resources
Kelly has been with CaRMS since September 2000. She is responsible for the financial stewardship of the organization and the prudent financial management of CaRMS’ assets, day-to-day operations and cash requirements. Kelly has a Bachelor’s degree in Science and over 15 years of broad financial experience.
Outside of work, Kelly manages a busy family farm with her partner Doug and her parents. They raise quality quarter horses, Catahoula dogs, as well as chickens and ducks. Currently, Kelly has three horses racing at Ajax Downs, and two barrel racing horses that compete across Canada and the United States. Kelly is known for sharing the bounty from her garden and can be found either on the back of a horse or on her tractor.
Manager, Human Resources
Kim has been with CaRMS since May 2011. As Human Resources Manager, her role is to contribute at both a strategic and operational level to identify human resources priorities and recommend effective solutions to support business objectives and enhance the workplace. Kim provides advice, support and service to managers and staff on all aspects of the HR function. Prior to joining CaRMS, Kim worked in healthcare, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, government and consulting and has over 20 years’ experience in human resources. Kim has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a post graduate certificate in Human Resources Management (CHRM).
Outside of work, Kim enjoys travelling, skiing, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She is married and has two children and a dog she enjoys walking daily.
Compliance and operational services
Manager, Compliance and Operational Services
Ashley has been with CaRMS since October 2008. As Manager of Compliance and Operational Services, she manages the Operations department, Translation Service department, and Documents department. Ashley oversees the organization’s privacy initiatives through a comprehensive Corporate Privacy Plan and is also responsible for organizational policy development and staff compliance and training. In addition, she aids in new business development and acts as a legal resource. Ashley is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C) and is working towards her Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation.
Prior to working for CaRMS, Ashley worked for Science North and completed her B.Sc. in Forensic Science specializing in Anthropology at Laurentian University. Outside of work, Ashley enjoys time in her kitchen cooking with and for her family, as well as travelling to new and exciting places around the world.
Manager, Client Services
Ryan has been with CaRMS since April 2007. Starting in an entry-level communications position, Ryan is now the manager of the Client Services department. Though primarily responsible for ensuring the organization’s clients are served efficiently and effectively, he also plays a key role in the advancement of committee work and ad-hoc projects.
Ryan loves hockey and golf, plays euchre, and tolerates football. His son Cohen loves lego, plays video games, and tolerates hockey and golf. Neither has any appreciation for soccer, and probably never will.
Team Lead, Client Relations
Geneviève has been with CaRMS since October 2011. As Team Lead, Client Relations, she liaises with and promotes positive relationships with stakeholders and represents CaRMS at various events. She also provides informative presentations to potential applicants on the R-1 match process through school visits and is responsible for applicant, undergraduate and postgraduate communications. Prior to joining CaRMS, Geneviève worked at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa as Assistant to the Director of Curricular Delivery where she assisted in managing curriculum development projects.
Geneviève also taught English in Taiwan for two years with the hope of learning Mandarin (she didn’t).
Manager, IT and Software Development
Norm is the Manager of IT and Software Development for CaRMS and is responsible for the implementation and development of CaRMS’ online services. He joined CaRMS in 2013. His previous work was in the telecommunications industry where he worked as an engineer, project manager and business process analyst for 20 years. He worked on projects in software development, software quality, customer service and business process design and improvement. Norm holds an M.B.A. from the Schulich School of Business as well as Science and Engineering degrees from the University of Ottawa.
Outside of work he enjoys coaching his kids’ hockey teams.
