What’s it like to work at CaRMS?

We sat down with Yogesh Sagar, a Senior Applications Developer at CaRMS to find out


Yogesh Sagar has been a Senior Applications Developer at CaRMS since July 2014. He is responsible for adding new features and enhancements to CaRMS Online, as well as creating and deploying new software builds on CaRMS’ testing and production environments.

What is a typical day like for you at CaRMS?

I usually try to set weekly goals and have a predefined set of tasks to conduct daily—whether it’s a request for a new build, troubleshooting or fixing production issues. Every day is a bit different depending on the tasks at hand. Most of the time I’m involved in the design and development of content for the next release, fixing bugs or adding enhancements. I often have to shift gears depending on what comes up!

In your opinion, what is the best part about working for this organization?

Two things are most important to me in my career—the work and the people. CaRMS has both ingredients. I love working for CaRMS because I work with wonderful folks who care about their work and the service CaRMS provides to our stakeholders. They make a positive difference in the lives of medical graduates and residency applicants. Everyone in every department at CaRMS brings value and contributes effectively to achieve the goals of the organization.

What do you think the biggest misconception is about CaRMS or the work you do?

When I first started working for CaRMS, people used to think that I worked for a dating service (a very different kind of “matching service”)! I had to explain the core values and mission of the organization to them.

One of the major misconceptions that even people who are familiar with CaRMS have is that we have control over the selection process. That just isn’t true. We are the facilitators of the process and our role is to provide an independent, fair, objective and transparent application and match service for medical training in Canada.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges for the organization in the coming year?

We have several new initiatives coming up, in addition to building on existing systems, so we are focused on continuous improvement and continuing to provide quality service through our applications and products.

What do you do to unwind after a really long day in the office?

I go home and relax, watch TV and eat dinner—my wife is an excellent cook! I like to hang out with my family and I love to read. I also have a passion for continuous learning in technology and try to learn new things whenever I can.
