Applying to a Quebec Faculty of Medicine
R-1 Admission to residency training programs in Québec via CaRMS is limited to graduates of accredited medical schools in Canada and the United States of America and International medical graduates who complete the equivalence process of the Collège des médecins du Québec. These graduates must be Canadian citizen or permanent residents and must not have undertaken previous medical postgraduate training in Canada or the USA. International medical graduates must also prove that they are « Quebec residents », as defined by the Quebec ministry of Education (ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur).
Previous Year Graduates
In Quebec, only previous year graduates who have never undertaken postgraduate training in Canada or the United States can be considered via CaRMS.
An American medical graduate seeking postgraduate training in Québec who is an American Citizen and not a dual citizen (Canada/USA), must apply under a special quota called the “contingent particulier”. Candidates must apply outside the CaRMS match, directly to the school of their choice.
Graduates of a United States osteopathic school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation are also eligible under the above criteria.
Out of province Visa Students are not eligible to apply to Quebec programs, due to provincial regulations. Quebec MD Visa Students are eligible to apply to Quebec programs.
International medical graduates
International medical school graduates who have not been granted equivalence of their MD from the Collège des médecins du Québec and who wish to obtain information on the practice of medicine in Québec, as well as the possibility of completing residency in Québec, should contact the provincial licensing body for information on the evaluation process. Please contact the CMQ directly for information (see below):
