Those occupying positions which are not funded by the Ministry of Health AND those with a Return of Service (RoS) agreement are not eligible, unless the RoS agreement includes subspecialty training. TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY | Subspecialty: Medicine subspecialties
Training level: Current resident
Graduates of a Canadian medical school who are:
Graduates of a United States medical school who are currently in their R3 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program. Graduates of an international medical school who are currently in their R3 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program. Notes:
Off-Cycle Residents: Candidates who will complete their PGY3 training between July 1 and December 31, 2024, are eligible to apply. Candidates must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start. All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.
Subspecialty: Critical Care Medicine Training level: Current resident
Graduates of a Canadian medical school who are currently in their final year (R4-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Accredited program in Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Cardiac Surgery. Graduates of a United States medical school (Canadian Citizen/ PR status) who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in an accredited US ACGME program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Cardiac Surgery may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply. International Medical Graduates who are currently in their final year (R4-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Cardiac Surgery. International Medical Graduates applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training. All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.

Graduates of a Canadian Medical School:
International Medical Graduates who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, and Rheumatology. Entry from other FRCPC approved programs such as Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Palliative Care is possible in exceptional cases Graduates of a United States medical school or candidates in their final year of their program must provide documentation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada confirming exam qualification. This means that the respective FRCPC(S) exam will be completed before the projected start of the Pain Residency Program in July of the following year. All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.

Subspecialty: Palliative Medicine Training level: Current Resident
Graduates of a Canadian medical school who are:
Graduates of a United States medical school (Canadian Citizen/ PR status) who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in an accredited US ACGME program in Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine or Neurology may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply. Entrance from other specialties may occur but must follow completion of the primary specialty training and must include twelve (12) months of clinical medicine-based rotations with a minimum of 6 months at a senior level (e.g. PGY-2 or if the resident is regularly entrusted with responsibility for direct independent patient care under the supervision of and direct responsibility to a senior subspecialty resident or faculty member), designed to allow achievement of competencies in the consultation and care of complex medical patients, interprofessional care, and effective communication skills. All candidates must be certified in their primary specialty in order to be eligible to write the Royal College certification examination in Adult Palliative Medicine. Please be aware the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) in British Columbia has mandated that all hospital and health care employers establish, implement and ensure compliance with a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy effective October 26, 2021. Residents matched to any University of British Columbia residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the PHO directive in order to start training on July 1, 2024.

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here. All supporting citizenship documentation must be notarized or certified. |
