CRITERIA FOR ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION For Entry in the 2024-25 Academic Year

All matched applicants must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) for postgraduate medical education.

Those occupying positions which are not funded by the Ministry of Health AND those with a Return of Service (RoS) agreement are not eligible, unless the RoS agreement includes subspecialty training. Applicants are required to provide written verification on their eligibility as part of their personal letter, within their application to the CaRMS match.

TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Medicine subspecialties

Training level: Current resident

  • Eligibility details:

Graduates of a Canadian medical school who are:

  • Currently in their R3 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program, or;
  • an accredited US ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Core Program.

Graduates of a United States medical school who are currently in their R3 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program.

Graduates of an international medical school who are currently in their R3 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program.

Notes:

  • Residents who are planning to complete a “Chief Medical Resident (CMR)” year are eligible to apply in their PGY4 year provided that:
  • The PGY4 year is supported outside of the usual funding source (e.g. Provincial government funding). The year cannot be self-funded, and
  • The Resident remains registered in an accredited Core Internal Medicine program for the full length of the Chief Medical Resident year.
  • Residency in a medical subspecialty would start at R4 salary level.

Off-Cycle Residents:  Candidates who will complete their PGY3 training between July 1 and December 31, 2024, are eligible to apply.  Candidates must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.

All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.

 

Subspecialty: Critical Care Medicine

Training level: Current resident

  • Eligibility details:

Graduates of a Canadian medical school who are currently in their final year (R4-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Accredited program in Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Cardiac Surgery.

Graduates of a United States medical school (Canadian Citizen/ PR status) who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in an accredited US ACGME program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Cardiac Surgery may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply.

International Medical Graduates who are currently in their final year (R4-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Cardiac Surgery.

International Medical Graduates applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.

All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.

 

Subspecialty: Critical Care Medicine

Training level: Licensed Physicians (including restricted licenses)

  • Eligibility details: Licensed Physicians who have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Cardiac Surgery are eligible to apply.

 

Subspecialty: Pain Medicine

Training level: Current Resident

  • Eligibility details:

Graduates of a Canadian Medical School:

  • who are currently in their final year (R4-R5) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Accredited program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, and Rheumatology are eligible to apply. Entry from other FRCPC programs such as Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, and Palliative Care is possible in exceptional cases.
  • who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in an accredited US ACGME program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine, and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, and Rheumatology may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply. Entry from other FRCPC approved programs such as Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Palliative Care is possible in exceptional cases.
  • applicants in their third year of their residency program must provide a letter from their respective Program Director and the Royal College Credentials Committee stating that they accept Pain Medicine training as meeting the subspecialty requirements for certification in Internal Medicine.

International Medical Graduates who are currently in their final year or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, and Rheumatology. Entry from other FRCPC approved programs such as Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Palliative Care is possible in exceptional cases

Graduates of a United States medical school or candidates in their final year of their program must provide documentation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada confirming exam qualification. This means that the respective FRCPC(S) exam will be completed before the projected start of the Pain Residency Program in July of the following year.

All active residents should be in good standing with their program director.

 

Subspecialty: Pain Medicine

Training level: Licensed Physicians (including restricted licenses)

All candidates must be certified in their primary specialty in order to be eligible to write the Royal College certification examination in Adult Palliative Medicine.

International Medical Graduates who are:

  • Currently in their R3 or R4 year of training in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Internal Medicine Core Program.
  • Currently in their final year (R5) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Accredited program in Anesthesiology or Neurology.

Subspecialty: Palliative Medicine

Training level: Licensed Physicians (including restricted licenses)

  • Eligibility details: Licensed Physicians who have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or College of Family Physicians of Canada may apply, but must meet the following:
    • Entrance from other specialties may occur but must follow completion of the primary specialty training and must include twelve (12) months of clinical medicine-based rotations with a minimum of 6 months at a senior level (e.g. PGY-2 or if the resident is regularly entrusted with responsibility for direct independent patient care under the supervision of and direct responsibility to a senior subspecialty resident or faculty member), designed to allow achievement of competencies in the consultation and care of complex medical patients, inter-professional care, and effective communication skills.
RESTRICTIONS

 

Please be aware the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) in British Columbia has mandated that all hospital and health care employers establish, implement and ensure compliance with a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy effective October 26, 2021. Residents matched to any University of British Columbia residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the PHO directive in order to start training on July 1, 2024.

  • Current R4 subspecialty trainees and residents in a GIM or a PGY 4 core program are NOT eligible.
  • Licensed Physicians may apply if they meet the criteria for licensed physicians noted under ‘Training Level Eligibility.
  • Residents commencing their R3 year after December 31, 2023, are NOT eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have not completed medical school in Canada and/or are not in a residency program in Canada will not be considered at this time.
  • International Medical Graduates applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.
  • None of our positions have a ROS obligation.

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for graduates of Quebec Medical Schools:

Candidates who attended medical school in Quebec where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of BC.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.

Applicants are considered to have met the English Language proficiency requirements if:

  1. the language of instruction at medical school was English, and
  2. the primary language of patient care was English, and/or
  3. they are currently training in a Canadian/US training program that delivers training in English, and/or
  4. the first and native language of the country where the physician was trained is English.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for graduates of Quebec Medical Schools:

  • Please note that candidates who attended medical school in Quebec where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of BC through the following, and results must be submitted to CaRMS by Rank Order List deadline:
    • Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 7 in each component with an overall band score of no less than 7. IELTS scores will be considered valid for 2 years from the date taken.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that is listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.
