À l’issue de la mise en œuvre de la compétence par conception (CPC) dans les programmes de formation générale en pédiatrie, à compter du jumelage des spécialités pédiatriques de 2024, les résidents devront terminer quatre années de formation en résidence avant de commencer leur sous-spécialité pédiatrique dans la plupart des provinces, sauf au Québec.
Les résidents actuellement dans les programmes de formation pédiatrique au Québec auront le choix de commencer la formation sous-spécialisée à des programmes au Québec après trois ans ou après quatre ans dans les autres provinces.
Afin d’accommoder ce changement, il y aura deux JSP consécutifs lors du cycle de jumelage de cette année :
- Le JSP de 2024 aura lieu en automne 2023, avec une date de début de formation en juillet 2024.
- • Le JSP de 2025 commencera peu après la fin du JSP de 2024 en novembre, avec une date de début de formation en juillet 2024 ou juillet 2025 au Québec ou en juillet 2025 dans toutes les autres provinces.
Les critères d’admissibilité pour les cycles du JSP de 2024 et de 2025 pour toutes les provinces seront affichés sur carms.ca en juin 2023.

Training Level
Competitive Stream positions in the first iteration are open to residents currently in a recognized Royal College PGY2 General Pediatrics program. For positions listed under the Competitive Non-MOH stream, please review the program description as there are alternate eligibility criteria.
Applications that are off-cycle by more than six months (with a program end date no later than December 31, 2020) are not eligible for this year’s match.
Off-cycle applicants are welcome to contact programs of interest following the conclusion of the match should there be any unmatched positions available to be considered for off-cycle entry.
Training Program
Dalhousie University will also consider a Canadian and those with permanent resident status who are currently in an accredited United States Pediatric Medicine Training program, but a copy of the candidate’s RCPSC Assessment of Training must be provided at the time of application.
All applicants must be eligible to register for an educational license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
A requirement for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia is that graduates of non-LCME/CACMS-accredited medical schools must include proof, as part of the completed license application, that verification through Physicians Apply has been initiated.

You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada to apply. Visa-sponsored residents are not eligible — those in that category should contact the PGY4 Subspecialty Training Program to inquire about the application process for sponsored residents.

Dalhousie University Criteria for Graduates of Non-LCME/CACMS-Accredited Medical Schools including Graduates of US Schools of Osteopathic Medicine (GNLCAMS):
The following 4 requirements for GNLCAMS must be provided in order to be considered for residency training at Dalhousie University:
- Legal Status
GNLCAMS must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident at the time of application. When applying candidates must submit one of the following verifications:
A photocopy of Birth Certificate issued by an authority in Canada with any photo identification; or
A photocopy of Canadian Passport; or
Canadian citizenship certificate, Record of Landing; or
Permanent Resident Card/Canadian Citizen Card.
- Proof of MD Degree or DO Degree
GNLCAMS must be a graduate of an acceptable medical school or Graduates of US schools of Osteopathic Medicine and must meet provincial licensing eligibility in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
A notarized/certified copy of medical school marks/transcripts and medical degree/diploma must be submitted. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a notarized translation.
- Language
Dalhousie University requires all applicants to be eligible to register for a license in all provinces in which the program requires training. Both the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island have specific regulations regarding English language proficiency for physicians from outside of Canada.

The 3 Quebec Faculties of Medicine offer training in sub specialties of Pediatrics to candidates who are, at the time of the Match, in their second year of Pediatrics in a Canadian or American Faculty of Medicine and who fulfill the following criteria:
Contingent régulier
These positions are available to current Quebec Pediatrics residents presently admitted via this quota;
Contingent particulier
Positions are also available to residents currently registered in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year in Pediatrics or in any other Pediatric Subspecialty Program in a Canadian Medical School outside of Québec or in an American Medical School; as well as to Pediatric Residents admitted via this quota and currently R2s in Pediatrics in a Québec Faculty of Medicine.
To be eligible, candidates have to hold:
An MD from a Canadian or a US Medical School.
Hold a D.O from a school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association.
OR
International Medical Graduates (DHCEU) who have previously obtained equivalence of their MD from the Collège des médecins du Québec.
The following applicants are not eligible:
- Visa trainees not currently registered via the contingent régulier in a Quebec program.
- Applicants from the Canadian Armed Forces.
International Medical Graduates who are Canadian Citizens and/ or Permanent Residents of Canada who are eligible to participate in the Pediatric Subspecialties Match must have previously obtained equivalence of their MD from the Collège des médecins du Québec and must currently be:
- Registered in a contingent régulier or a contingent particulier position in Pediatrics in one of the 4 Quebec Faculties of Medicine.
- Registered in a Pediatrics Residency Program in Canada or in the U.S.
Residents who are currently in their 3rd or 4th year in Pediatrics or in a Pediatric Subspecialty Program and who were previously matched into General Pediatrics or into a Subspecialty Pediatric Program during their 2nd year of core Pediatrics in a Quebec Faculty of Medicine and who want to redirect to another Pediatric Subspecialty Program are required to do so through the Changes of Programs process and follow the application deadlines. They are not allowed to participate in the Pediatric Subspecialties Match.

A Canadian Medical Graduate or U.S. Medical Graduate (CMG/USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). From here on in this will be referred to as a CMG
An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that is not accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). From here on in this will be referred to as an IMG.
For Entry in the 2020-21 Academic Year
The Ontario Faculties of Medicine and Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have agreed to the following policies for the 2020 Pediatric Subspecialty Match. It is important to note that individual programs may have specific criteria that are used to review applications. Please carefully review the program specific criteria as well as the provincial criteria listed below. All matched applicants must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) for postgraduate education.
ANY DELAYS IN PROVIDING ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION TO CPSO MAY RESULT IN A DELAY IN ISSUANCE OF A CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION AND A DELAY IN START OF POSTGRADUATE TRAINING BEYOND JULY 1ST.
Training level and Program
Who can Apply:
- Current residents who will be completing PGY3 training in Pediatrics on or before June 30, 2020 are eligible. Residents who will have completed their PGY4 year prior to the July 1, 2020 start date are only eligible for non-MOH funded positions.
- Trainees enrolled in RCPSC accredited Pediatrics or ACGME Accredited Pediatrics programs.
Sponsored Residents (Foreign Governments) or Trainees on work permits may apply directly to the school/program for subspecialty training. These positions are supernumerary and not part of the CaRMS Pediatric Subspecialty Match process.
Notes:
- Exception to the Training Level and Training Program Criteria for both MOHLTC funded and Non MOHLTC funded positions are those applicants that are acceptable for:
- Critical Care Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Specialty Training Requirements. This includes those residents enrolled in Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Pediatrics. Royal College
- Pediatrics Emergency Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Specialty Training Requirements. This includes those residents enrolled in Emergency Medicine. Royal College
- Residents who are planning to complete a « Chief Medical Resident (CMR) » year are eligible to apply in their PGY4 year provided that:
- The PGY4 year is supported outside of the usual funding source (e.g. Provincial government funding). The year cannot be self-funded, and
- The Resident remains registered in an accredited Core Internal Medicine program for the full length of the Chief Medical Resident year.
Off cycle residents
MOHLTC – Funded positions
PGY3 residents with completion dates between July 1 and December 31, 2020 are also eligible but must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
Pediatric residents with completion of PGY3 training after December 31, 2020 should apply to the 2021 match.
Non MOHLTC – Funded positions
Current residents who will be completing PGY3 training or PGY4 training in Core Pediatrics on or before June 30, 2020 are eligible.
PGY3 and PGY4 residents with completion dates between July 1 and December 31, 2020 are also eligible but must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
Pediatric residents with completion of PGY3 training after December 31, 2020 should apply to the 2021 match.
Physicians in full time practice -Independently registered physicians, unless enrolled in full-time residency, are not eligible to apply.
Legal Status
Proof of valid current citizenship or permanent resident status must be provided by submitting one of the following verifications to CaRMS by the Rank Order List deadline. No other forms of verification are acceptable:
- Notarized/certified photocopy of Birth Certificate issued by an authority in Canada accompanied by photo ID (examples include a driver’s license or health card), or
- Notarized/certified photocopy of Canadian Passport, or
- Notarized/certified photocopy of Canadian citizenship certificate, Record of Landing; accompanied by photo ID (examples include a driver’s license or health card) or
- Notarized/certified photocopy of Permanent Resident Card/Canadian Citizen Card – copies of both sides of card must be provided and legible.
Previous Subspecialty Training / Transfers
Trainees currently enrolled in subspecialty training are not eligible. The pediatric subspecialty match cannot be used for transfers.
Training/Practice Status (including those on restricted licenses)
Trainees currently enrolled in Pediatrics (Note 1) in a Royal College or ACGME accredited program, who hold a postgraduate education certificate of registration or equivalent in their province are eligible for the match. Physicians in full-time practice are not eligible for this match.
Requirements for IMGs:
- Proof of MD degree
IMGs must be graduates of an acceptable medical school on the World Directory of Medical Schools World Directory of Medical Schools A copy of medical school marks/transcripts and medical degree/diploma must be submitted. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a translation. - MCCEE
IMGs must have written and passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). Statement of results must be provided by the File Review Date. Please review specific program descriptions for more information. Starting in 2019, the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) will be delivering the MCCQE Part I in Canada and internationally in over 80 countries up to five times per year. Once the MCCQE Part I is offered internationally, all candidates will be challenging this examination directly, without first having to pass the MCCEE. As a result of this change, MCC will be phasing-out the MCCEE. - Language proficiency
Must provide proof of English or French language proficiency through ONE of the following: - International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7 in each component, OR
b. TOEFL-Ibt – passing score of 93 including a minimum score of 24 on the speaking section, OR
c. A pass result in the French proficiency test administered by the Collège des Médecins du Québec, OR
d. Candidates for whom their primary and secondary, or medical school education was conducted in English or French, the Ontario medical schools will accept Language Proficiency Attestations as follows: - Primary and Secondary Education: Mailed directly from the Senior Academic Administrators of both schools to the program confirming that all of the candidate’s primary and secondary education was conducted completely in English or French.
ii. Medical School: Mailed directly from the Dean of the candidate’s medical school confirming that the language of instruction and patient care was conducted completely in English or French OR
iii. World Directory of Medical Schools Language Option – If the instruction and the language of patient care at the undergraduate medical school was conducted completely in English or French, then a candidate can submit to the Program a copy or printout of the World Directory of Medical Schools website listing the medical school which clearly states that the language of instruction is English or French.

- Registration
IMGs must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) for postgraduate education. See the CPSO’s website for information: CPSO
All IMGs need to have their documents verified through physiciansapply.ca. Any IMGs who has not yet had their documents verified by physicianapply.ca will be required to do so. This process can take several months to complete. Individuals are advised to visit http://physiciansapply.ca/ at the point of application.
Failure to meet or provide proof of any of the stated requirements may result in applicant file not being reviewed.
Return of service (MOHLTC funded positions only)
All IMGs will be required to sign an IMG Training Agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that requires the IMG to return service for a period of five years upon completion of their training in their area of specialty (including Family Medicine). This ROS commitment can be fulfilled anywhere in Ontario with the exception of the following communities: The City of Ottawa, The Greater Toronto Area including the City of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham and Pickering.
IMGs with pre-existing ROS obligations must disclose these obligations at time of application. IMGs that have active ROS obligations may not be eligible for Ontario-funded training positions. Such individuals should contact the ministry for further information.
The ROS commitment to Ontario must commence within the timeframe set out in the individual’s IMG Training Agreement with Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The location where the IMG returns service must be approved by the ministry as per the terms of their IMG Training Agreement.

The University of Manitoba Rady Faculty of Health Science, Max Rady College of Medicine and Manitoba Health have agreed to the following policies for the 2020 Pediatric Subspecialty match.
Eligibility
- Candidates who are currently in a RCPSC or ACGME accredited Core Pediatrics residency program as a PGY2 or PGY3.These candidates will be starting their PGY4 or PGY5 year of subspecialty training on July 1, 2020.
- Trainees currently enrolled in Adult Emergency Medicine residency programs are eligible to apply to the Pediatric Subspecialty Match for Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Residents currently in subspecialty training are not eligible to switch subspecialty programs using the Pediatric Subspecialty Match.
- All applicants must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) on the educational register. CPSM categories of registration and eligibility criteria for licensure after residency can be reviewed at the following website:
- Visa-sponsored trainees must apply for subspecialty training outside of the Pediatric Subspecialty Match. Please see the following website for more information.
- Applicants who are off-cycle by more than six months will be considered for the subsequent match.
Requirements for all applicants
Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status. IMGs must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents and must submit one of the following notarized/certified documents to CaRMS by the file review opening date. Photocopies are accepted but citizenship documents other than what is listed below are not accepted.
- Birth Certificate issued by an authority in Canada with any photo ID, or
- Canadian Passport, or
- Canadian citizenship certificate; if the Canadian citizenship certificate was issued prior to February 1, 2012, legible copies of both sides of the certificate must be provided; or
- Permanent Resident Card; legible copies of both sides of the card must be provided.
- No other forms of verification are acceptable.
- Successful completion of the MCCQE Part 1 with submitted proof of examination results. United States Medical Graduates may submit proof of the USMLE Step 1 and 2 in lieu of the MCCQE Part 1.
- All matched candidates must attend the mandatory PGME orientation day which is held at the end of June.
Requirements for United States Medical Graduates and/or residents in United States training programs
- Applicants who are residents in a U.S. training program must have their training assessed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to ensure their training meets Canadian specialty-specific requirements.
- Applicants who have received a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine degree (DO) from a United States medical school must fulfill IMG application requirements.
Requirements for International Medical Graduates
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must be graduates of an acceptable medical school on the World Directory of Medical Schools list. Confirmation of World Directory status MUST be provided by submitting a copy or printout from the World Directory website (www.wdoms.org).
- Notarized/certified copies of medical school transcript(s) and medical degree/diploma must be submitted. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a notarized translation.
- All IMG candidates accepted to pediatric subspecialty programs are required to complete the mandatory two four-week orientation program in June.
- In addition the MCCQE1 scores, an official copy of the applicant’s MCCQE1 score must be provided by the file review opening date.
- Language Proficiency – English is the language of study at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. All IMG applicants whose first language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency to CaRMS by the file review opening date:
- Academic Version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 7 in each component with an overall band score of no less than 7. IELTS scores will be considered valid for 2 years from the date taken.
Candidates are exempted from English language proficiency testing under the following circumstances:
- the language of instruction and patient care throughout the entire undergraduate medical education curriculum was in English. A letter of attestation mailed directly from the Dean of the candidate’s medical school confirming that the language of instruction and patient care was conducted completely in English is required.
- their undergraduate medical education was taken in English in one of the countries that have English as a first and native language (see list below)
All other candidates must have taken the Academic Version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7 in each component with an overall band score of no less than 7. IELTS scores will be considered valid for 2 years from the date taken:

- PGY2 or PGY3 Canadian/US medical graduates currently enrolled in Core Pediatrics residency programs in Canadian or U.S. medical schools are eligible to apply. PGY3 International Medical Graduates (IMGs) currently enrolled in Core Pediatrics residency programs in Canadian medical schools and are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents and meet all other eligibility requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta are eligible to apply.
- PGY2/PGY3 IMGs from other provinces must declare any Return in Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.
- Sponsored Trainees are not eligible to apply for subspecialty training through the Pediatric Subspecialty Match.
Medical Council of Canada
MCCQE Part 1 and 2: The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) Part 1 is required and Part 2 is highly recommended.
Additional criteria for eligible US trainees
Individuals pursuing residency training in the US and who have an MD from a non LCME accredited school are NOT eligible to apply.
MCCQE Part 1 and 2: The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exams (MCCQE) Part 1 is required and Part 2 is highly recommended.
RCPSC Assessment: Applicants who have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status and who are training in the United States in a Pediatrics Program must provide a ruling letter from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Residents who complete their PGY-3 year between July 1 and December 31, 2020 are also eligible but must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
Residents who complete their PGY-3 year after December 31, 2020 should apply to the 2021 match.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited Core Pediatrics residency program in a Canadian or ACGME-accredited American university.
Re-entry applicants to subspecialty training are not eligible and are referred to the University of Alberta Re-Entry Competition.

Source of funding/source of medical degree/return of service
- PGY2 or PGY3 Canadian/US medical graduates currently enrolled in Core Pediatrics residency programs in Canadian or U.S. medical schools are eligible to apply. PGY3 International Medical Graduates (IMGs) currently enrolled in Core Pediatrics residency programs in Canadian medical schools and are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents and meet all other eligilibity requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta are eligible to apply.
- PGY2/PGY3 IMGs from other provinces must declare any Return in Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.
- Sponsored Visa Trainees are not eligible to apply for subspecialty training through the Pediatric Subspecialty Match.
Medical Council of Canada
MCCQE Part 1 and 2: The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) Part 1 is required and Part 2 is highly recommended.
Additional criteria for eligible US trainees
Individuals pursuing residency training in the US and who have an MD from a non ACGME accredited school are NOT eligible to apply.
MCCEE: Applicants who have trained in the United States must provide proof of passing the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE) at the time of application. US trainees who are specialist certified by a member board of the American Board of Pediatric Specialties may request an exemption from the MCCEE and can provide the letter of exemption from the Medical Council of Canada in lieu of MCCEE results.

For Entry in the 2019-20 Academic Year
The following policies apply to the 2019 Pediatric Subspecialty Match. It is important to note that individual programs may have specific criteria that are used to review applications. Applicants are responsible for reviewing program specific criteria, as well as the provincial criteria listed below, to ensure they meet all required eligibility criteria.
All matched applicants must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) for postgraduate medical education. https://www.cpsbc.ca/.
Training Level
Candidates must have completed at least three years of RCPSC accredited training in Core Pediatrics by June 30, 2019, in order to be eligible for subspecialty training in this match.
Off Cycle Residents: Candidates who will complete their PGY3 training between July 1 and December 31, 2019 are eligible to apply. Candidates must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
Pediatric residents who will be completing their PGY3 training after December 31, 2019, should apply to the 2020 match.
Candidates in a core Pediatrics program or a Subspecialty Pediatrics program at the PGY4 level and higher are eligible to apply.
Exception to the Training Level and Training Program Criteria are those applicants that are acceptable for:
- Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This includes residents enrolled in Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Pediatrics.
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This includes those residents enrolled in Emergency Medicine.
