CRITERIA FOR ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION Please be aware that Alberta Health Services (AHS) determines immunization requirements for all healthcare workers who provide services on AHS, Alberta Precision Laboratories, Covenant Health, Carewest, and CaptialCare property. This applies to resident physicians. Resident physicians matched to any University of Alberta or University of Calgary residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the AHS policy to start training July 1, 2024. Immunization requirements are subject to change as per AHS policy.

TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Pediatrics subspecialties

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details:
    • Currently enrolled as a PGY4 in a Core Pediatrics residency program.
    • CMG applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited residency program in an RCPSC-accredited Canadian or ACGME-accredited US university.
    • IMG applicants must be currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited residency program in Canada.
    • Applicants must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
    • Residents who complete their PGY4 year between July 1 and December 31, 2024, are also eligible but must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.

Subspecialty: Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details:
    • Currently enrolled as a PGY4 in a Core Pediatrics residency program.
    • Currently enrolled in their final year of training in one of the following residency programs: Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Medicine, or General Surgery.
    • CMG applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited residency program in an RCPSC-accredited Canadian or ACGME-accredited US university.
    • IMG applicants must be currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited residency program in Canada.

Subspecialty: Pediatric Emergency Medicine​

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details:
    • Currently enrolled as a PGY4 in a Core Pediatrics residency program.
    • Currently enrolled in as a PGY4, or PGY5 in an Emergency Medicine (Adult) residency program.
    • CMG applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited residency program in an RCPSC-accredited Canadian or ACGME-accredited US university.
    • IMG applicants must be currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited residency program in Canada.
RESTRICTIONS

 

  • Residents who are off cycle by more than 6-months (with start date after December 31, 2024) are not eligible.
  • Re-entry applicants to subspecialty training are not eligible.
  • Trainees currently enrolled in subspecialty Pediatrics training or any training beyond the General Pediatrics PGY4 level are not eligible to apply through CaRMS but may be eligible to apply for re-entry.
  • This match cannot be used for program transfer.
  • Individuals pursuing residency training in the US and who have an MD from a non-LCME accredited school are NOT eligible to apply.
  • IMGs from other provinces must declare any Return in Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.

All citizenship documents must be notarized.

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES

A Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) or U.S. Allopathic Medical Graduate (USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Language assessment document accepted: IELTS Academic

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024
  • Minimum score: minimum grade of 7.0 in each component
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine – on a computer at a test venue​

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024
  • Minimum score: minimum grade of B in each component
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – General

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024
  • Minimum score:  minimum score of 9 in each component
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Applicants from French language schools must meet the English Language Proficiency – College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta | CPSA as outlined above.

MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS The MCCQE Part 1 and LMCC requirement is program-specific. Please review individual program descriptions for additional information.

Applicants who have trained in the United States must provide proof of passing the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) Part 1 at the time of application.

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS N/A
MEDICAL EDUCATION RCPSC Assessment: Applicants who have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status and who are training in the United States in a Pediatrics Program must provide a ruling letter from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

U.S. graduates who are considering applying for the Royal College General Pediatrics exam for Spring of 2024 must apply before April 30, 2023 to confirm eligibility.

The application for Preliminary Assessment of Training must also be completed to ensure that your training satisfactorily meets the Canadian specialty-specific training requirements.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  Failure to meet or provide proof of any of the stated requirements may result in the applicant file being removed at any point during the match.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.

In Alberta, an International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school not accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).
