2018 Cycle Information
The first iteration of the CaRMS match will include two parallel streams; Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) Stream and International Medical Graduate (IMG) Stream, each having designated positions. There will be no cross-over or transfer between the two streams. Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada to be eligible for either stream.
All matched applicants must meet the licensing criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) for postgraduate education. ANY DELAYS IN PROVIDING ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION TO CPSA MAY RESULT IN A DELAY IN ISSUANCE OF LICENSURE AND A DELAY IN START OF POSTGRADUATE TRAINING. The CMG stream is limited to graduates of LCME/CACMS-accredited medical schools in Canada and the United States.
Graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine in the United States are eligible for IMG designated positions but must be assessed by the Alberta International Medical Graduate Program (AIMG).
Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents and must provide proof by submitting one of the following verifications to CaRMS by the Rank Order List deadline. No allowances for late submission. No other forms of verification are acceptable.
- Photocopy of Birth Certificate issued by an authority in Canada with any photo ID, or
- Photocopy of Canadian Passport, or
- Photocopy of Canadian citizenship certificate, Records of Landing; or
- Photocopy of Permanent Resident Card/Canadian Citizen Card – copies of both sides of card must be provided.
MCCQE Part I
All matched applicants will be required to provide proof of successful completion of the MCCQE Part I by the end of their R1 year.
English Language Proficiency Requirements for graduates of Quebec and New Brunswick Medical Schools:
Please note that candidates who attended medical school in Quebec or New Brunswick where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of Alberta through one of the following, and results must be submitted to CaRMS by Rank Order List deadline:
- Must have completed IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet Based Test) within 24 months before application, and achieved the following minimum scores in a single test:
- IELTS academic version: minimum 7.0 in each of the components OR
- TOEFL IBT academic version: minimum of 24 in each of the four components (Note: TOEFL to be phased out December 31, 2017)
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must be deemed eligible by the Alberta AIMG Program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions.AIMG Program eligibility criteria are specified on the AIMG Program website (www.aimg.ca)
The AIMG Program determination of eligibility to participate in the match process is valid for the specified match year only. Applicants who are deemed eligible for participation in a specified match year who are not matched must re-apply to and be deemed eligible by the AIMG Program in order to be considered for a subsequent match year. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) Candidates who are matched through the first iteration of CaRMS must successfully complete the AIMG Program Externship prior to the start of Residency. Only those candidates who successfully complete the Externship will be eligible to begin the residency program to which they matched. Please see the AIMG Program website (www.aimg.ca) for details about the Externship.
Eligible unmatched CMGs and resident physicians currently in training* may apply to the unfilled CMG positions and eligible IMGs may apply to the unfilled IMG positions and unfilled CMG positions.
*The second iteration is available for program transfer only for graduates of Canadian medical schools. IMG’s currently enrolled in residency programs are not eligible for the CaRMS Match in Alberta.
To be eligible for the second iteration, IMGs must be deemed eligible by the AIMG Program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions.
