2024 Cycle Information

CRITERIA FOR ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION As an outcome of Competence by Design (CBD) implementation in general Pediatrics training programs, beginning with this year’s 2024 Pediatric Subspecialty Match (PSM), pediatric residents must now do four years of residency training prior to starting their pediatric subspecialty in all provinces except Quebec. To accommodate this change, there will be two consecutive PSM matches in this year’s match cycle:

  • 2024 PSM: takes place in the fall of 2023 with a July 2024 start date; and
  • 2025 PSM: will begin shortly after the 2024 PSM concludes in November, with a July 2025 start date.

For Entry in the 2024-25 Academic Year

The following policies apply to the 2024 Pediatric Subspecialty Match.  It is important to note that individual programs may have specific criteria that are used to review applications.  Applicants are responsible for reviewing program-specific criteria, as well as the provincial criteria listed below, to ensure they meet all required eligibility criteria.

With the change to Competence by Design (CBD) for residency training in Pediatrics in Canada, residents who are currently enrolled in an ACGME accredited Pediatrics programs in the U.S must now master all pediatric generalist competencies of the Pediatrics specialty prior to proceeding to applying for subspecialty training in Canada.

All residents currently enrolled in ACGME accredited Pediatrics programs in the U.S must have their training assessed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada prior to being eligible to apply for Pediatrics subspecialty training in Canada. LICENSING BODY All matched applicants must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) for postgraduate medical education.

TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Pediatrics subspecialties

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details
    • Candidates must have completed at least four years of RCPSC accredited training in Core Pediatrics by June 30, 2024, in order to be eligible for subspecialty training in this match.
    • Off-Cycle Residents:  Candidates who will complete their PGY4 training between July 1 and December 31, 2024, are eligible to apply.  Candidates must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
    • Candidates in a core Pediatrics program or a Subspecialty Pediatrics program at the PGY4 level and higher are eligible to apply.

Subspecialty: Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details
    • Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This includes residents enrolled in Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Pediatrics.

Subspecialty: Pediatric Emergency Medicine

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details
    • Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program according to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This includes those residents enrolled in Emergency Medicine.

Subspecialty: Pediatrics subspecialties

  • Training level: Licensed Physicians (including restricted licenses)
  • Eligibility details
    • Licensed Physicians (including those on restricted licenses) are eligible to apply if they have Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited training in Pediatrics.

Current resident applicants must be enrolled in an accredited Core Pediatrics program in a Canadian training program. Training must be recognized by the RCPSC.

RESTRICTIONS Please be aware the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) in British Columbia has mandated that all hospital and health care employers establish, implement, and ensure compliance with a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy effective October 26, 2021. Residents matched to any University of British Columbia residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the PHO directive in order to start training on July 1, 2024.

Pediatric residents who will be completing their PGY4 training after December 31, 2024, should apply to the 2025 match.

Off-cycle PGY-3 residents who are a part of the last non-CBD cohort are advised to reach out to their current Program Director for advice on next steps

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here.

All supporting citizenship documentation must be notarized or certified.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES

A Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) or U.S. Allopathic Medical Graduate (USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Language assessment document accepted: IELTS Academic

  • Document validity (not expired) by: ​Must be valid up to July 1, 2024​
  • Minimum score: 7.0 in each component
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine – on a computer at a test venue​

  • Document validity (not expired) by: ​Must be valid up to July 1, 2024​
  • Minimum score: B in each component.
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – General 

  • Document validity (not expired) by: ​Must be valid up to July 1, 2024​
  • Minimum score: 9 in each component.
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Applicants are considered to have met the English Language proficiency requirements if:

  1. the language of instruction at medical school was English, and
  2. the primary language of patient care was English.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for graduates of Quebec Medical Schools:

Candidates who attended medical school in Quebec where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of BC.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS International Medical Graduates must declare any Return of Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.
