2021 R-1 Main Residency Match
The 2021 R-1 match timeline is currently under review.
The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Resident Matching Committee (ARMC) is developing a new timeline that will see some milestones and deadlines shifted later in the year to accommodate schedule changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. A revised timeline will be posted once approved.

January 2021
12 January 2021 at 12:00 (noon) ET
Program directors and administrators may begin to add or remove file reviewers for their program(s) in CaRMS Online. File reviewers will receive an email from CaRMS with instructions on how to set up their account.
February 2021
8 February 2021 at 12:05 ET
Programs now have access to all submitted applications and documents (including letters of reference). They will review applications and communicate with applicants to schedule interviews.
March 2021
3 March 2021 at 08:00 ET
Applicant photos are now available to view. Photos are not available prior to this date
8 March 2021 - 28 March 2021
Programs are responsible for scheduling interviews with applicants during this period.
Interviews for current-year Canadian medical school graduates from out-of-town universities are conducted during this three-week period. Interviews for international medical graduates and applicants at their own schools are coordinated separately with no specific national time period.
All 2021 R-1 match interviews will be in a virtual format, as per the decision of the AFMC Resident Matching Committee (ARMC).

File reviewer will no longer have access to CaRMS Online once PGME offices approve programs’ rank order lists on this date.
