CaRMS was created to be an independent, fair and transparent facilitator of the medical residency application, selection and match process in Canada. In that role, we are committed to providing exceptional service and value to our clients while ensuring the sustainability of the match well into the future.
Keeping costs as low as possible for applicants
It is with these goals in mind that, for the fourth year in a row, we have reduced the R-1 match participation fee (which includes application to nine programs) by two per cent, to $302.89 from $309.01. In concert with this base fee reduction, program application fees will be increased slightly this year, to $31.00 from $30.50. The net effect of these fee adjustments allows us to keep overall costs for the average R-1 applicant constant from 2020 to 2021, while ensuring we are able to maintain the high level of service our clients expect and deserve.
This follows two per cent fee reductions for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 R-1 matches, and a fee freeze introduced for 2017. Over the last few years, we have also increased the number of applications included in the R-1 participation fee from four to nine, in response to an upward trend in the average number of program applications submitted Canadian medical graduates. Over the last five years, these measures have amounted to savings of about 25 per cent for applicants applying to 21 programs.
These fee changes have been implemented by CaRMS’ Board of Directors, which comprises individuals nominated by member organizations that include learner groups, faculty, medical associations, educators and regulators. They reflect our continuing commitment to value for money and responsible financial stewardship.
