The R-1 Main Residency Match (R-1 match) is the focal point for a great deal of important career planning and decision making for applicants. There are continuing discussions within the medical education community aimed at understanding the nature of the decisions and plans made at this point along medical learners’ career journey.

To help inform these discussions, we are sharing some longitudinal data that we hope will provide some insight into several aspects of applicants’ career-related decision making.

This data, derived from annual post-match surveys of R-1 match applicants from 2010 to 2019, synthesizes a decade of CMG responses to questions covering discipline decisions, electives decisions, program location decisions, and career planning.
