The SBSAL was established in 2013 by the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) Board of Directors in recognition of the nearly three decades of leadership Sandra Banner has provided to CaRMS. The purpose of the SBSAL is to encourage the development of future leaders in medicine through public recognition and financial support to learners that have demonstrated interest in/aptitude for leadership.

Both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate medical trainees are invited to apply. One winner will be selected from each group.

The award is accompanied by funding to support each learner’s proposed leadership activities and will be presented at the annual CaRMS Forum during the 2019 Canadian Conference on Medical Education in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
