To encourage the development of future leaders in medicine
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) was established in 1970 to provide a transparent and fair process to match medical trainees with residency positions throughout Canada. CaRMS has earned international recognition for the high standards of its programs and services.
Sandra Banner assumed executive leadership of CaRMS in 1986 and was instrumental in its growth and development. In 2013, in recognition of the 29 years of leadership she provided to CaRMS, the Board of Directors established the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership (SBSAL).
The purpose of these annual awards is to encourage the development of future leaders in medicine, through public recognition and financial support of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees who have demonstrated interest in/aptitude for leadership.
Each award is accompanied by up to $3,000 in funding to support learners’ proposed leadership training and/or volunteer activities, with defined leadership development goals, e.g., formal leadership training at an accredited educational institution, a leadership elective, participation at a leadership conference; or a leadership role in a volunteer project that benefits the medical education community and/or the broader community.
After thoughtful consideration, the CaRMS Board of Directors has determined that 2025 will be the final year that the SBSAL is awarded. The Board is immensely proud of the inspiring individuals who have been recognized over the years, and extends a heartfelt thanks to all past recipients and those who have supported this initiative. The Board also recognizes the enduring legacy of Sandra Banner’s visionary leadership. As Executive Director of CaRMS from 1986 to 2015, Ms. Banner was instrumental in the organization’s growth and development. While this marks the conclusion of the award, we look forward to celebrating excellence in new and evolving ways going forward.
