Prior to the 2027 match cycle, the Spring Subspecialty Residency Match (SSRM) was called the Pediatric Subspecialty Match (PSM). This match was renamed to welcome programs across a variety of disciplines wishing to participate in a Spring match. You can learn more about the change by clicking here.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in the United States is no longer accrediting Canadian medical schools. Read more.

This means:

  • Canadians graduating from a non CACMS (Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools) accredited medical school on or after July 1, 2025 will be considered international medical graduates (IMGs) in the residency application process in Canada starting in the 2026 match; and
  • Individuals graduating from a Canadian medical school on or after July 1, 2025, will be considered international medical graduates (IMGs) when applying to residency programs in the United States.

CaRMS is confirming how these changes affect provincial eligibility requirements for the upcoming match cycle. Our website will be updated as information becomes available.

Eligibility for graduates of ACGME-accredited US pediatric residency programs

All Pediatrics residents in ACGME-accredited Pediatrics programs who are interested in applying for a Pediatrics subspecialty program in Canada will need to have their training assessed by the RCPSC in comparison to Canadian training.

You will be required to:

  • complete an approved PGY-4 year in a core RCPSC Pediatric program in Canada. The RCPSC assessment of U.S. training will establish what is needed during the PGY-4 year. U.S residents interested in doing a PGY-4 year in a Canadian core Pediatrics program will need to reach out to the residency programs individually and explore if this opportunity is available.

OR

  • be a resident who is completing a PGY-4 chief resident year in an ACGME-accredited program in the U.S. Your training must also be assessed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to determine your eligibility for this match. For more information on having your training assessed, please contact Chantal Benoit at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (cbenoit@royalcollege.ca).

Additional Requirements

You will be required to have obtained your Medical Identification Number for Canada (MINC) and enter it in your application.

Potential additional requirements

  • Proof of language proficiency requirement (Refer to the Summary of language proficiency requirements)
  • Complete Medical Council of Canada Exam (MCCQE Part I)
  • In addition to the basic eligibility requirement, each province has criteria that must be met by applicants applying for positions within that province. Applying to programs in this match

The SSRM match is comprised of different application streams (e.g., Particular Stream, Competitive Stream, Competitive MOH Stream, etc.). An application stream is defined as an allocation of positions based on eligibility and funding. For more detailed information on stream, please consult this Help Center article.

In addition to basic eligibility requirements, there are also individual provincial requirements that may differ between provinces as provincial governments are responsible for the management, organization and delivery of health care services for their province and may have differing regulations in place.

Refer to the provincial criteria of the province you are interested in training in, as well as the program disciplines and locations you are interested in applying in by consulting program descriptions  for more information.
