As the 2019 match cycle approaches, we are pleased to announce that incoming R-1 applicants will again benefit from reduced match fees.
CaRMS was created to be an independent, fair and transparent facilitator of the medical residency application, selection and match process in Canada. In that role, CaRMS is committed to providing exceptional service and value to our clients, while ensuring we make the investments necessary to ensure the sustainability of the match well into the future.
Over the course of the last five years, the average number of program applications for Canadian medical graduates in the R-1 match has grown, resulting in applicants bearing an increased cost burden. Faculties are also dealing with stretched resources as a result of funding pressures within the larger health care system.
For the second year in a row, we have reduced the R-1 match participation fee by two per cent—to $315.04 from $321.50. We have also increased the number of program applications included in the match participation fee to nine. Fees paid by faculties have also been reduced by two per cent.
This follows the two per cent reduction in applicant and faculty fees for the 2018 match, and the fee freeze introduced for 2017. The increase in included applications builds on last year’s increase to eight from four.
These fee changes implemented by CaRMS’ Board of Directors, which includes representation from learner groups, faculty, medical associations, educators and regulators, reflect our continuing commitment to value for money and financial stewardship.
