The second iteration of the 2019 R-1 Main Residency Match is now open. All registered applicants will receive an email containing information on how to log into CaRMS Online and start their application. Unmatched applicants from first iteration will have access to second iteration on February 26. First iteration applicants who wish to enter second iteration now must withdraw from first iteration before participating in second iteration.
The second iteration of the match follows the same structure as the first iteration, but on a more compressed schedule.
Typically, unfilled positions from first iteration become competitive in second iteration, meaning that CMGs and IMGs compete for the same positions. However, due to a change in policy for Ontario and Alberta, programs in these provinces will maintain separate IMG and CMG streams in the second iteration of the 2019 R-1 match. This means that CMGs can only apply to CMG-designated positions and IMGs can only apply to IMG-designated positions in Ontario and Alberta during the second iteration.
You can review specific provincial criteria within the posted eligibility criteria. Information about which programs are available in second iteration will be posted on February 28. For more important second iteration dates, check out the match timeline.
