The CaRMS Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Nesbitt as CEO of CaRMS, effective June 16, 2025.
For more than five decades, CaRMS has played a unique and vital role in Canada’s medical education continuum, and the Board is confident Mr. Nesbitt will continue to advance CaRMS’ mission, vision and values as the organization embarks on this exciting new chapter. While Mr. Nesbitt will officially begin his role on June 16, John Gallinger will continue to serve as CEO until June 30 to ensure a smooth and thoughtful leadership transition.
“Jeff is a collaborative relationship builder, and I am thrilled he will be joining the CaRMS team,” said CaRMS Board Chair Dr. Monique Williams. “His unique combination of experience and knowledge, coupled with deep technical expertise and a genuine passion for improving Canada’s healthcare system, makes him the ideal candidate to lead CaRMS into the future.”
Mr. Nesbitt brings over 25 years of experience driving organizational success across the education, technology, and not-for-profit sectors—much of it within healthcare. Most recently, he served as CEO and Registrar of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and the Canadian College of Health Information Management, Canada’s national bodies for health information professionals. In this role, he advanced certification and academic accreditation standards while advocating for the profession nationwide. Previously, he was National Vice President at the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation and has served on numerous boards and advisory groups, including the Federal Pan-Canadian Health Data Expert Advisory Group and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network.
Mr. Nesbitt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Computer Science from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University. He has also completed graduate-level certificates in marketing and entrepreneurship from Stanford University and in corporate governance from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He is currently pursuing a doctorate at Royal Roads University, focusing on governance and resilience in the not-for-profit sector.
“CaRMS plays a vital role in connecting future physicians with residency opportunities across Canada,” said Mr. Nesbitt. “I’m honoured to work alongside the team, board, and partners to drive meaningful change at a pivotal moment for medical education and health workforce planning. Together, our efforts will help shape the future of care for Canadians.”
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is the independent, not-for-profit organization established by the medical educational community to administer a safe, fair and equitable Canadian postgraduate residency match. Since 1970, CaRMS has provided an open, transparent application and matching process that puts medical students and residents on the path to practicing medicine in Canada. Through extensive data resources, deep process expertise and collaborative partnerships, CaRMS is committed to helping the Canadian medical education community meet the challenges of the future. Mr. Nesbitt joins CaRMS as CEO upon the retirement of John Gallinger, whose decade of leadership has been instrumental in shaping CaRMS’ success.
