2022 R-1 Main Residency Match
The 2021 R-1 match timeline is currently under review.
The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Resident Matching Committee (ARMC) is developing a new timeline that will see some milestones and deadlines shifted later in the year to accommodate schedule changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. A revised timeline will be posted once approved.

If you were a PGME, program administrator or director for a previous CaRMS match, you can log into CaRMS Online using your existing username and password. If you have forgotten your username or password, click on the ‘Forgot your username or password option’ on the CaRMS Online login page.
If you are a new program director or administrator for this match and have not received an email, please contact your PGME office.

Program directors and administrators may log into CaRMS Online and start updating their program descriptions. All programs must update their program descriptions for the new match year before the PGME program description approval deadline.
Program descriptions can be modified throughout the match if critical updates are needed.
September 2021

Program directors and administrators must submit their program descriptions to their postgraduate offices for review and approval by 12:00 ET on this date.

Applicants may begin the application process.
All registered applicants, as well as final year Canadian medical graduates (CMGs), are sent an email with information on how to log into CaRMS Online and start their application.
Applicants who participated in a previous match that was run on CaRMS Online can log into their CaRMS Online account using their existing username and password to participate in the match. Anyone who has forgotten their username or password can click on the ‘Forgot your username or password’ option on the CaRMS Online login page.

Program descriptions for all programs participating in the match should be approved and available on carms.ca for applicants to review. Once program descriptions are approved, they are immediately available on carms.ca for applicants to consult.
December 2021

Applicants can start selecting the programs to which they wish to apply and assigning requested documents.
Ensure quota is entered in the Quota Management section of your CaRMS Online account. If quota is not entered, applicants will not be able to apply.
January 2022
4 January 2022 at 12:00 (noon) ET
Program directors and administrators can add or remove file reviewers for their program(s) and create filters in preparation for file review.
Once file reviewers have been added, they will receive an email from CaRMS with instructions on how to create an account in CaRMS Online.
Applications will be available for review when file review opens.
31 January 2022 at 12:05 ET
Programs now have access to all submitted applications and documents.
Programs may now start updating applicants’ interview offer status.
February 2022

Programs are to complete all initial interview offer status updates in CaRMS Online by end of day. Official interview invitations must be distributed to applicants within five days of the update to CaRMS Online.

Applicant photos are now available to view. Photos are not available prior to this date.
28 February 2022 - 20 March 2022
Interviews for current-year Canadian medical school graduates from out-of-town universities are conducted during this period. Interviews for international medical graduates and applicants at their own schools are coordinated separately with no specific national time period.
Programs are responsible for scheduling interviews with applicants directly.

Discussions regarding reversions, if required, should begin now to ensure final reversions are received and understood by CaRMS in advance of the postgraduate office reversion deadline.

Applicants and programs may begin creating their rank order lists in CaRMS Online.
Once a program rank order list has been submitted, postgraduate offices can begin approving them in CaRMS Online. Postgraduate offices can also begin approving quota and submitting reversion instructions starting today.

Programs must submit their rank order lists through CaRMS Online by 14:00 ET. If programs do not submit by today, postgraduate offices can submit on their behalf.
31 March 2022 at 15:00 ET
Postgraduate offices must approve rank order lists and quota, as well as submit any reversion instructions by this deadline.
April 2022
11 April 2022 at 12:00 (noon) ET
Postgraduate offices will receive summary reports. Canadian undergraduate offices will receive their faculty’s summary reports as well as a list of their faculty’s unmatched applicants who provided consent for their information to be released.

Match results are available through CaRMS Online.

This is the last day to access information in your CaRMS Online account for this match.
Applicants will no longer have access to the information in their application after this date.
Programs should download and save any match-related files before this date. Matched applicant files can only be retrieved from postgraduate offices once CaRMS Online closes.
