Criteria for All Medical Graduates

CRITERIA APPLICABLE TO ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES
GENERAL INFORMATION	To be eligible in Quebec, candidates must hold an MD degree from a Faculty of Medicine in Canada or hold a degree from outside Canada (IMG). To be admitted in a medical specialty, they must be registered in the third year of an Internal Medicine residency in a Canadian or an American Faculty of Medicine (except when applying for the Critical Care program for which residents In their fourth or fifth year may be considered). Furthermore, since 2022, Quebec’s faculties of medicine may consider applications from the following candidates: R5 in hematology in other provinces who wish to train for a sixth year in medical oncology in Quebec in order to get a double certification. R5 in medical oncology in other provinces who wish to train for a sixth year in hematology in Quebec in order to get a double certification. R5 in microbiology or in infectious diseases in other provinces who wish to train for a sixth year to get double certification (the candidate must apply to Adult Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology). Doctors currently in practice who will have been practising for at least 12 months when entering subspecialty training. In the particular quota, residents who are planning to complete a Chief Medical Resident (CMR) year may be considered. For thoracic surgery and psychiatrics subspecialties participating in tis match, see special rules below. Faculties cannot commit to offering a spot to a candidate who does not complete the match process. Thus, unmatched candidates in the first iteration have to participate in the second iteration and have to submit a rank order list each time.

SOURCE OF FUNDING	Unless otherwise specified, all positions are funded by Quebec’s ministry of Health and Social services. Some residency positions (moniteurs cliniques) with a different source of funding source may be offered and are identified as Non-MOH positions.
TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY	Subspecialty: Medicine subspecialties Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Registered in 3rd year in Internal Medicine in a Canadian Faculty of medicine. Contingent régulier (Regular quota):positions reserved for residents currently in the continent régulier in Quebec. Contingent particulier (Particular quota):positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Exception:Medical oncology, Hematology, and Adult Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology may consider applications from residents who are currently in their fifth year of training. (see General Information above). Doctors currently in practice who will have been practising for at least 12 months when entering subspecialty training may also be considered. Subspecialty: Critical Care Medicine Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Registered in 3rd, 4th or 5th year in Internal Medicine or in another program leading up to Intensive Care, in a Canadian Faculty of medicine. Contingent régulier (Regular quota): positions reserved for residents currently (or, for intensive care, having been previously) in the continent régulier in Quebec; Contingent Particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already (or, for intensive care, having been previously) in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Doctors currently in practice who will have been practising at least 12 months when entering subspecialty training may also be considered. Subspecialty: Geriatric psychiatry Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Registered in 4th year in psychiatry in a Canadian Faculty of medicine. Contingent régulier (Regular quota):positions reserved for residents currently in the contingent régulier in Quebec. Contingent particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Subspecialty: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Registered in 4th year in psychiatry in a Canadian or an American Faculty of medicine. Contingent régulier (Regular quota): positions reserved for residents currently in the contingent régulier in Quebec. Contingent particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Subspecialty: Forensic psychiatry Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Registered in 4th year in psychiatry in a Canadian or an American Faculty of medicine. Contingent régulier (Regular quota): positions reserved for residents currently in the continent régulier in Quebec. Contingent particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Subspecialty: Thoracic surgery Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Residents being trained or having been trained in general surgery, cardiac surgery and also in respirology, ENT and radiooncology in a Canadian Faculty. Contingent régulier (Regular quota): positions reserved for residents currently in the continent régulier in Quebec. Contingent particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates from outside Quebec or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. Candidates who are unable to start their R-4 on July 1 are eligible provided they can start their training by no later than the last period of the academic year for which they are applying June 1st, 2026. Subspecialty: Hematology Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Programs may consider candidates currently in fifth year in hematology Subspecialty: Medical Oncology Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Programs may consider candidates currently in fifth year in medical oncology Subspecialty: Adult Infectious Diseases Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Programs may consider candidates currently in fifth year in this specialty who want to be trained for a sixth year to obtain the double certification. Subspecialty: Occupational Medicine Training level: Current resident Eligibility details: Candidates with training in public health and preventive medicine may also apply. Candidates must have completed five years of postgraduate medical training in public health and preventive medicine before undertaking the occupational medicine program. Candidates must be able to start their medical specialty program no later than Monday, June 1, 2026. For residents currently training in Quebec: Only residents from the core program in internal medicine whose training is out of phase by seven or more periods at the deadline for the submission and assignment of applications and documents may be exceptionally authorized to switch to a later cohort. Residents in this situation who wish to take advantage of this possibility must present a written request to their Faculty’s office of Postgraduate Medical Education. The request to switch cohorts must be approved by the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education and is irreversible.
RESTRICTIONS	For non-MOH positions, candidates who have a MD degree from a Quebec university or candidates who have already been in residence in Quebec in the contigent régulier or the contingent particulier are not eligible. Residents already admitted to a medical specialty in Quebec cannot use the Match to seek a program change. They must apply through the regular program change request process Candidates from the Canadian Armed Forces are not eligible.
MATCH STREAMS	Contingent régulier (Regular quota):positions reserved for residents currently in the contingent régulier in Quebec. For critical care, candidates who were previously in the contingent régulier may be considered. Contingent particulier (Particular quota): positions reserved for candidates applying from Canada, outside Quebec R3 in Internal medicine or (R6 in certain specialties, see above) or who are already in the contingent particulier in Quebec. For critical care, candidates who were previously in the contingent particulier may be considered. Doctors currently in practice who will have been practising at least 12 months when entering subspecialty training may also be considered. When equivalent applications are reviewed In the admissions process of a given program at a given faculty, applicants who are graduates of a Québec medical school and/or who have a marked interest for medical practice in Québec at the end of their training will take precedence in the selection for “contingent particulier” Non-MOH positions are only for candidates who have not already been in residence in Quebec in the contingent régulier or the contingent particulier and who do not have an MD degree from a Quebec university. Positions are available to residents currently registered in Internal Medicine in a Canadian Medical School outside of Québec All candidates will be matched at the R-4 level (except for the Critical Care program) or R-6 in certain cases (see above).

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES
MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS	There are no MCC examination provincial requirements.
RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS	N/A
MEDICAL EDUCATION	MD diploma required
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION	Eligibility conditions for matching in Critical Care Residents authorized to apply for admission via CaRMS, in the regular stream of the Critical Care Program, must be registered in a Quebec Faculty of Medicine and must have completed level R3 of the programs that give access to the intensive care program within the required timeframe, based on CRMCC guidelines. Residents in the internal medicine program registered in a Quebec Faculty of Medicine who wish to begin their Critical Care residency in a new Medical School will be transferred to this new Faculty. Residents registered in specialties other than Internal Medicine who have not completed their basic specialty will remain registered in their home faculty but must provide a letter from the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education at their home Faculty and from the Director of the basic program, attesting that they have been released to complete their training for the Critical Care Program in the new Faculty to which they have been matched.

Additional Criteria for IMGs

CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES
MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS	If an IMG is already training in Canada or in the Unites States, there are no MCC examination requirements for this match. No other IMG will be considered in this match (except for non-MOH positions).
RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS	N/A
MEDICAL EDUCATION	Recognition of the equivalency of the MD degree is not required for IMGs already training in Canada or the United States. To apply, IMGs must be currently registered in a Québec Medical School in the contingent régulier or the contingent particulier or in another Faculty of Medicine in Canada.
