CRITERIA FOR ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION For Entry in the 2023-24 Academic Year

The following applies to the 2023 Family Medicine Enhanced Skills program.

LICENSING BODY All matched applicants must meet the criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) for postgraduate medical education.

TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Enhanced skills

  • Training level: Current Canadian Family Medicine training
  • Eligibility details: Trainees currently enrolled in the 2nd year of an accredited CFPC Family Medicine Residency program OR have already obtained CCFP certification.
RESTRICTIONS Please be aware the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) in British Columbia has mandated that all hospital and health care employers establish, implement and ensure compliance with a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy effective October 26, 2021. Residents matched to any University of British Columbia residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the PHO directive in order to start training on July 1, 2023.

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES

A Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) or U.S. Allopathic Medical Graduate (USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Language assessment document accepted: IELTS Academic

  • Document validity (not expired) by:Must be valid up to July 1, 2023
  • Minimum score: 7.0 in each component. Please see here.

Language assessment document accepted: Occupational English Test (OET) -Medicine 

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2023
  • Minimum score: B in each component. Please see here 

Language assessment document accepted: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – General 

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2023
  • Minimum score: 9 in each component. Please see here.

The IELTS indicator examination is not accepted.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for graduates of Quebec Medical Schools:

Please note that candidates who attended medical school in Quebec where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of BC the following, and results must be submitted to CaRMS by Rank Order List deadline:

  • Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 7 in each component with an overall band score of no less than 7. IELTS scores will be considered valid for 2 years from the date taken; OR
  • Occupational English Test (OET) – Medicine. A minimum score of B in each component; OR
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – General. A minimum score of 9 in each component.

Applicants are not required to provide proof of English Language proficiency if they are currently training in a Canadian/US training program that delivers training in English.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.

  • Graduates of International Medical schools must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC through the following, and results must be submitted to CaRMS by the Rank Order List deadline.
  • Applicants are considered to have met the English Language proficiency requirements if:
    • the language of instruction at medical school was English, and
    • the primary language of patient care was English, and/or
    • they are currently training in a Canadian/US program that delivers training in English
    • the first and native language of the country where the physician was trained is English.

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS International Medical Graduates applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on the application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude R-3 training.
