CRITERIA FOR ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health and the University of Saskatchewan, College of Medicine have agreed to the following policies and eligibility requirements for the 2024 Family Medicine/Enhanced Skills match. Please note that individual programs may have specific criteria that will be used to review applications. Applicants are responsible for reviewing program-specific criteria, as well as the criteria listed below, to ensure they meet all requirements and eligibility criteria. Failure to meet or provide proof of any of the stated requirements or documents may result in an applicant’s file not being reviewed or ranked.

ACLS

Prior to the commencement of training, successful applicants must provide proof of ACLS certification that is current as of July 1, 2024. The ACLS Provider course must be certified by the American Heart Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. ACLS certification that is not endorsed by these organizations, or is completed entirely through an online course, will not be accepted. Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with obtaining ACLS certification.

COVID Vaccination Requirements

Applicants matched to all University of Saskatchewan residency training programs must ensure they are compliant with vaccination policies for the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Health Authority and Province of Saskatchewan in order to commence their training program on July 1, 2024.

LICENSING BODY College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan

Successful applicants must be eligible for and maintain registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan for an educational register license and must maintain eligibility for an educational register license throughout their entire training program.

Credentialing

Successful applicants must be eligible for and maintain privileges within the Saskatchewan Health Authority as determined by its credentialing process.

TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Enhanced skills

  • Training level: Current Canadian Family Medicine training
  • Eligibility details: Applicants must currently be completing their PGY2 year in a Family Medicine Residency program accredited by CCFP or have obtained the CCFP designation. (Note: Successful applicants must hold a CCFP designation at the time the Family Medicine/Enhanced Skills training commences)

Subspecialty: Enhanced skills

  • Training level: Licensed physicians with CCFP designation
  • Eligibility details: Licensed physicians who have obtained the CCFP designation are eligible.
RESTRICTIONS

 

Applicants who are not eligible at the University of Saskatchewan include:

  • Visa students studying at Canadian Medical Schools.
  • Students whose postgraduate training is funded by the Department of National Defense.

All supporting citizenship documentation must be notarized or certified. Proof of citizenship must be current at the time of application and expired documents will not be accepted.

CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES

A Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) or U.S. Allopathic Medical Graduate (USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Applicants are not required to provide proof of English language proficiency if they are currently training in a Canadian or U.S. residency training program that delivers training entirely in English.

Applicants who are training at Quebec medical schools or the University of Ottawa (French Stream) may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency as determined by CPSS.

Language assessment document accepted: IELTS Academic​

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024
  • Minimum score: Minimum of 7.0 in each of the components
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine – on a computer at a test venue​

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024
  • Minimum score: Minimum grade of B in each of the four subsets 
  • Results available and submitted to programs by: The assignment of applications and documents deadline​

Language assessment document accepted: Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine – on paper at a test venue​

  • Document validity (not expired) by: Must be valid up to July 1, 2024

MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS N/A
RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS Applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on their application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training. Applicants are required to provide written verification from their funding agency confirming they have received approval from the funding agency to apply to the FM/ES match.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school.

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Applicants are not required to provide proof of English language proficiency if they are currently training in a Canadian or U.S. residency training program that delivers training entirely in English.

Applicants who are training at Quebec medical schools or the University of Ottawa (French Stream) may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency as determined by CPSS.

MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS
Examination: MCCQE Part I
  • Date/milestone assessment submission required: File review opening
  • Requirement: Mandatory with exceptions

IMG applicants must satisfy CPSS requirements for educational licensure, including relevant examinations in effect at the time of application.

IMG applicants who have completed Family Medicine residency training outside Canada and obtained the CCFP designation may be exempted from the MCCQE1 requirement if they have passed the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3. Any exemptions will be determined by CPSS.

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS Applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on their application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.
