What is considered post-graduate training?

  • Postgraduate medical training is accredited RCPSC/CFPC/ACGME training in Canada or the U.S, that takes place upon the completion of a medical degree.
  • Preliminary training in the United States is considered accredited postgraduate training for the purposes of R-1 match first iteration eligibility.
  • Fellowships are considered postgraduate training in Quebec.

  1. The actual number of days the applicant is training within the clinical setting, not calendar days.
  2. Refer to program descriptions, provincial criteria and the AFMC National Transfer Guidelines to learn more about eligibility and required documentation.
  3. QUEBEC:
    • Residents currently in training in Quebec are not eligible to apply to Particular stream programs within the second iteration of the R-1 match. Residents who are interested in transferring programs should communicate with their postgraduate office to discuss this request.
    • Graduates who have already participated in a Quebec residency program can apply to the Particular stream in the R-1 Second Iteration, but only if 12 months have passed between the end of training in the previous program and admission to the new program. Candidates who will have terminated their previous residency training prior to December 31, 2025 may participate in the Particular stream; the beginning of their new program would be adjusted so at least 12 months have passed between the end of the previous training and the beginning of the new one.
