CRITERIA APPLICABLE TO ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES

GENERAL INFORMATION Information concerning the 2023-2024 cycle with admission on July 1st, 2024

Applying to a Quebec Faculty of Medicine

In the regular stream(contingent régulier): R-1 Admission to residency training programs in Québec via CaRMS is limited to graduates of accredited medical schools in Canada and the United States of America and International medical graduates who complete the equivalence process of the Collège des médecins du Québec. This year, these graduates must simply prove that they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and must not have undertaken previous medical postgraduate training (including a fellowship) in Canada or the USA. IMG candidates who do not correspond to these criteria must contact the Quebec faculties of medicine directly to enquire if they may submit an application for admission via the particular stream (contingent particulier).

Previous Year Graduates

In Quebec, only previous year graduates who have never undertaken postgraduate training in Canada or the United States can be considered via CaRMS.

US graduates

An American medical graduate seeking postgraduate training in Québec who is an American Citizen and not a dual citizen (Canada/USA), must apply under a special quota called the particular stream. Candidates must apply outside the CaRMS match, directly to the school of their choice. Canadian citizens may apply in the regular stream, via CaRMS.

Graduates of a United States osteopathic school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation are also eligible under the above criteria.

Visa students

Quebec MD Visa Students are eligible to apply to Quebec programs.

MATCH STREAMS Only candidates meeting the above criteria for the contingent régulier will be considered.
RESTRICTIONS
  • Out of province Visa Students are not eligible to apply to Quebec programs, due to provincial regulations.
  • IMGs who have not obtained the recognition of the equivalency of their MD degree from the Collège des Médecins du Québec are not eligible.
  • Candidates who have undertaken postgraduate training in Canada or in the USA (including a fellowship) are not eligible.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS Four positions are available for candidates who will commit to practicing medicine in New Brunswick for at least five years. Successful candidates will be required to sign the Return of Service contract prepared for this purpose by New Brunswick before beginning their residency training. The contract is found within the program descriptions of the programs with a return of service obligation.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have French language skills in order to obtain a position within the « réseau de santé vitalité » in accordance with the requirements of the language policy. Once matched, if the resident decides not to continue or not to complete the training, they will have to reimburse the costs of the training paid by New Brunswick. If the resident decides not to practice in New Brunswick, a penalty of $400,000 with interest will be imposed.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS  Four positions are available for candidates who will commit to practicing medicine in New Brunswick for at least five years. MEDICAL EDUCATION MD equivalency must have been recognized by the Collège des Médecins du Québec
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION To participate in the R-1 match you must:

  • be a medical graduate who has obtained a medical degree from an institution that meets one of the following criteria:
  • A school of osteopathic medicine; or
  • An international medical school listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools, and
  • have your MD equivalency recognized by the Collège des Médecins du Québec; and
  • have not been previously in postdoctoral studies (including fellowships) in Canada or the United States.

International medical school graduates who have not been granted equivalence of their MD from the Collège des médecins du Québec and who wish to obtain information on the practice of medicine in Québec, as well as the possibility of completing residency in Québec, should contact the provincial licensing body for information on the evaluation process.

International medical graduates who are eligible for applying to Québec programs will be required to provide a copy of the letter from the CMQ to confirm their status. Candidates eligible for the particular stream shall apply directly to the school of their choice.

International Medical Graduates who complete the equivalence process of the Collège des médecins du Québec can be considered via the first iteration of the CaRMS Match provided they complete the application process before the deadline (December 1st 10, 2023, at noon for admission in 2024). Those who could do so before the second iteration deadline (April 4, 2024, at noon will be authorized to participate in the second iteration.

PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP must be submitted with each application.
