CRITERIA APPLICABLE TO ALL MEDICAL GRADUATES |

GENERAL INFORMATION | Please be aware that Alberta Health Services (AHS) determines immunization requirements for all healthcare workers who provide services on AHS, Alberta Precision Laboratories, Covenant Health, Carewest, and CaptialCare property. This applies to resident physicians. Resident physicians matched to any University of Alberta or University of Calgary residency program must ensure they are able to comply with the AHS policy to start training July 1, 2023. LICENSING BODY | All matched applicants must meet the licensing criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) for postgraduate education. See the CPSA website for information. | |||||||||||
MATCH STREAMS | The first iteration of the CaRMS match will include two parallel streams: Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) Stream and International Medical Graduate (IMG) Stream, each having designated positions. There will be no cross-over or transfer between the two streams.
Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada to be eligible for either stream. The CMG stream is limited to graduates of LCME/CACMS-accredited medical schools in Canada and the United States. Graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine in the United States are eligible for IMG designated positions but must be assessed by the Alberta International Medical Graduate Program (AIMG). IMG Stream IMGs must be deemed eligible by the AIMG Program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions. AIMG Program eligibility criteria are specified on the AIMG Program website. |

CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS |
CaRMS is partnering with third-party organizations to automate the verification of citizenship/legal status required by postgraduate offices for entry into residency. Third-party verification simplifies the process for applicants and programs. All applicants who do not receive third-party citizenship verification will be required to upload and assign an acceptable proof of citizenship document. Please see additional information here. |
ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR CANADIAN MEDICAL GRADUATESA Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) or U.S. Allopathic Medical Graduate (USMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). |

PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY | Please note that candidates who attended medical school in Quebec, New Brunswick, or the University of Ottawa (French stream) where the language of instruction or the primary language of patient care was not English, must fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements of the College of Physicians of Surgeons of Alberta.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATESAn International Medical Graduate (IMG) is an individual who received their medical degree from a medical school that is listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) published by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). A U.S. Osteopathic Medical Graduate (USMG- Osteo) is an individual who received their medical degree from an accredited Osteopathic medical school. |

PROVINCIAL ASSESSMENT | Assessment name: AIMG Program
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must be deemed eligible by the Alberta AIMG Program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions. AIMG Program eligibility criteria are specified on the AIMG Program website. The AIMG Program determination of eligibility to participate in the match process is valid for the specified match year only. Applicants who are deemed eligible for participation in a specified match year who are not matched must re-apply to and be deemed eligible by the AIMG Program in order to be considered for a subsequent match year. Please visit the AIMG Program website. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) Candidates who are matched through the first iteration of CaRMS must successfully complete the AIMG Program Externship prior to the start of Residency. Only those candidates who successfully complete the Externship will be eligible to begin the residency program to which they matched.
