R-1 Summary of citizenship requirements – Archives

This eligibility information is from the previous match year. The archive of the R-1 Summary of citizenship requirements is intended for reference purposes only until we have received all current year eligibility requirements from each province. All applicants applying to the R-1 Main Residency Match must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. There are two options to prove your citizenship/legal status.

Proof of citizenship must be submitted by the deadline for submission and assignment of applications and documents, unless otherwise indicated below.

  1. QUEBEC: In the first iteration, MD visa students and U.S citizens are eligible in the contingent régulier, only if they are already studying in Quebec with a student permit. In the second iteration, other candidates may be considered in the contingent particulier.
  2. ONTARIO: Must be accompanied by a Canadian government-issued photo ID.
  3. ALBERTA: If you are submitting proof of Canadian Permanent Residence, you must also submit the Record of Landing, clearly showing the date of landing in Canada. The Record of Landing is not accepted on its own. It must accompany proof of Canadian Permanent Residence.
  4. BRITISH COLUMBIA: Proof of citizenship must be submitted by the program rank order list deadline
  5. ONTARIO: An exception has been made for the 2025 R-1 match, and the provincial authority is currently engaging with its Truth and Reconciliation circle to make a recommendation for implementation in the 2026 Match cycle.
  6. SASKATCHEWAN: The Certificate of Indian Status and Secure Certificate of Indian Status are accepted as proof of citizenship documents. Proof of citizenship must be submitted by the program rank order list deadline.
